Make games sa

rAge is almost upon us. Only a couple more days before the Geekening takes place in Joburg – we can finally start getting excited. I’m certainly keen to see everyone at our community drink and it’s great to see the crowds of people who care about games. Last year’s rAge highlight for me were all the local indies, so here’s what you can get your hands on this year.

Alien Labotomy

Alien labotomy

Originally created during Ludum Dare 29, Alien Lobotomy sees playings taking on the role of an alien seeking to take over Earth. In order to do this, you will need to rewire each target’s brain using their own neurons in a creative math puzzle. The game looks slick and pretty and is really rather cool.

BAD

Battle Arena Drones will be brought to you by Celestial. It is planned as a free-to-play game and Celestial will actually be having a tournament during rAge with a rAge only droid available as a prize. Tournaments and things to win? Sounds like a reason to pay them a visit.

Broforce

Suicide mook Broforce

Arguably the most successful local indie game to date, Broforce is a force to be reckoned with. Combining classic action arcade styling with crazy ‘merican patriotism, you’ll definitely want to save all the Bros and kill all the terrorists. Plus it’s even better in co-op. If you still having picked up the game that made all the PlayStation executives change their twitter handles, you should definitely give it a whirl at rAge.

Cadence

Cadence title

Cadence is one of my most anticipated local indies. It part puzzler, part musical toy and a whole load of fun. I played the demo a while back and absolutely loved it, but the game has grown and expanded since then. You simply have to try it out at rAge. Here is a video just to prove how awesome it is.

Clutchfighter

I honestly can’t find any information about this game. Even the organizers don’t know what the game is about. I suppose we’ll all just have to go and be surprised.

Dead Run

Deadrun promo

Dead Run is a Flappy Bird inspired game from the ridiculously talented Two Plus Games. It’s pretty, unique and far too addictive. The game will release soon on mobile platforms, so be sure to play it at rAge and see just how worthwhile it is. Want a taste in advance? You can actually play it here.

MONTEZ

MONTEZ

A psychological platformer-puzzle game in which you take control of two characters simultaneously, I can’t help thinking of Braid when I play MONTEZ. And that’s a good thing, because it’s a really cool game. Celestial are behind this gem of a game as well, working together with an incredibly talent teenage developer, Kobus v.d. Walt.

Neon Shadow

Tasty Poison Games are a really slick studio, primarily making mobile games although they are also working on the incredibly ambitious and exciting Tom Sparks. However, at rAge they will be showing off Neon Shadow, a fast-paced Cyber Punk FPS inspired by classic shooters. It’s built for iOS, Android and has even made it to the OUYA.

Rooks Keep

Rooks keep

Rooks Keep is just one of the local indies that made it through Greenlight on Steam. It’s a PC “fantasy melee deathmatch/arena game” described as UT with swords.

Snailboy

Snailboy slap

We thoroughly enjoyed Snailboy last year when we played it for review. It’s slick, polished and very well done. There might even be a second Snailboy on the horizon – if you missed out on this cute little game, you should give it a whirl at rAge.

Stasis

Stasis concept art

Stasis made a whole bunch of news when the game was successfully Greenlit, and raised over $100k on Kickstarter. Add to that the fact that the guys behind the game are ridiculously cool, and it already sounds awesome. For those who still don’t know, Stasis is a 2D isometric point-and-click adventure game set in the future on a desolate spacecraft. Solve puzzles and uncovered the horrific experimentation and illicit research as you delve into an ever expanding mystery.

Agent Unseen

Agent unseen

Agent Unseen is a stealth procedural death trap featuring permadeath. Be the greatest secret agent as you sneak, steal, kidnap and assassinate your way through a variety of levels. Brought to you by Clockwork Acorn, the same guys who made Monsters and Medicine, I’m keen to give it a whirl and see what the game is all about.

Viscera Cleanup Detail

Viscera

Currently in Early Access on Steam and highly successful, Viscera Cleanup Detail is returning to rAge this year. Instead of killing all the sci-fi horror creatures, you now need to clean up the space station. Armed with a mop and bucket, it’s your job to cleanup the hero’s mess.

ZX Hyperblast

Zx hyperblast

A ridiculously tough bullet hell game, ZX Hyperblast returns to rAge to show off what’s been done in the past year. Prepare to die, and shoot, and die some more. You can check it out on Steam Greenlight, too.

It is really cool, I wouldn’t call it a game though.

I tried playing Viscera Cleanup Detail, but it’s just a little boring. Will give it a shot again once it’s been fully released.
