Like a wise man (who invented the keytar tie) once said “I feel like I’m taking crazy pills here!” See remakes are, by default, not supposed to be good. If they were, we’d have a serious lack of source material for our poor excuses at humour around here. But just like Fede Alvarez’s Evil Dead, Kimberley “Boys Don’t Cry” Pierce’s reimagining of Stephen King’s classic horror story, famously brought to life by Brian De Palma back in 1976, is actually looking pretty good.

Don’t believe me, then check out this first full trailer which shows Julianne Moore trying to win the Creepy Mom of the Year award, while Chloe Moretz gets treated like Harry Potter and makes with the telekinesis in retaliation.

A reimagining of the classic horror tale about Carrie White (Chloë Grace Moretz), a shy girl outcast by her peers and sheltered by her deeply religious mother (Julianne Moore), who unleashes telekinetic terror on her small town after being pushed too far at her senior prom. Based on the best-selling novel by Stephen King, “Carrie” is directed by Kimberly Peirce with a screenplay by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa.

Now the argument could be made that trailer is a little spoilery. After all, the first movie was released nearly four decades ago, so there’s going to be a whole new generation of people who don’t know what happens at that infamous prom. These people are also apparently Amish, as I can’t think of any other way that they haven’t by now had one of cinema’s most famous scenes spoiled for them.
That aside though, I appreciate the bit more detailed look as it gives us an idea of the tone that Pierce will be taking with this. If you noticed the snippets of flaming corpses being flung around, then you know that they certainly aren’t shying away from the violence (though I don’t think you should get your hopes up for Chloe Moretz shower scenes quite yet). Also, this version seems to have included some of the additional scenes in the Town that’s found in the book, but which De Palma left out of his version.
If there is one possible point of contention though, it’s that Sissy Spacek played Carrie in De Palma’s version with an almost unnatural awkwardness, which helped to make her eventual flip all that more dramatic. Chloe Moretz’s Carrie seems to be playing it a lot more straight faced pre-telekinetic flame-out, but she’s an incredibly talented young lady, so I have the utmost faith in her ability to sell the role.
But how creepy is Julianne Moore though? Sheesh. I always knew gingers had no soul, but damn!
Carrie will be telekinetically exploding into cinemas on October 18, 2013

I just watched the whole movie in 2 minutes… Lucky for me, I’ve already seen the original and read the book, but just because it’s a remake, doesn’t justify giving everything in the trailer… seriously. But it does look amazing. Will definitely watch it.

Yeah, revealing that much is a bit annoying, but apparently this is way things are done now. *sigh*

I can’t remember the book that well at all, or the original movie for that matter. But if memory serves me right, this feels a lot closer to how the book was. If that is the case, is this really a remake or a new adaptation?

It’s supposed to be going back to King’s book, hence why the synopsis refers to it as a “reimagining” and not a remake of De Palma’s version.
