Man, that Chris Columbus can do it all! It seems that discovering new continents, and directing a couple of Harry Potter movies was just not enough for him, so now he’s also helming the feature adaptation of popular Youtube video, Pixels!
Also, that dude is aging well!
THR reports that Sony has tapped Columbus to helm the feature film adaptation of Pixels. The animated short film, which showed a city being attacked by 8-bit characters from classic videogames.
Originally, the short film’s creator Patrick Jean was set to make his big time directorial debut with this, but that appears to not have panned out, with Columbus being brought onboard to replace him, while Jean just Executive Produces. AccoiSony is apparently looking to design the film as a “Ghostbusters-style action comedy in which characters come out of a video game to wreak havoc in the real world.”
This should play well into Columbus’ directing strengths as he has already shown his skill with family friendly, effects heavy fair in his long career, with films like Home Alone 1 & 2, Harry Potter 1 & 2, Bicentennial Man, Mrs Doubtfire, and his last feature film effort, Percy Jackson and the Olympians: Lightning Thief, among others. He also penned the screenplay for both Gremlins and Goonies.
But if his credentials weren’t enough, Horrible Bosses director Seth Gordon will also act as producer on this film.
Here’s the incredibly cool original short film:
PS: Seriously though, how good does Chris Columbus look for a guy born in Italy in the 1500’s?!
