Chris Pratt has been cast as the first of the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

I’ve discovered something. You know what’s the best way to get cast in a highly coveted lead role in one of these massive box office destroying superhero flicks? Don’t be considered. Yes, you read that right. It seems that lately, every single time a huge role is up for grabs, and the studios release a list of names that they are considering for the job, that list never contains the name of the person they actually end up picking.

Case in point, Marvel Studios has picked Chris Pratt for the role of Peter Quill aka Star Lord in their upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy.

Firstly, if you responded with “Who?!” to Pratt’s name, then clearly you’re not watching Parks and Recreation. Secondly, if you’re not watching Parks and Recreation then I’m not sure that we can be friends.

Pratt has been capably proving his charm and comic timing on that show for years now, which is perfect as it appears that director James Gunn will playing up the more comical side of Guardians. The fact that it’s hard to take a giant living tree who only speaks using his name or a foul mouthed humanoid raccoon seriously, may have played a part in that decision.

But it definitely won’t just be wall to wall banana peel gags for Pratt though, because as the de facto leader of the Guardians, Quill – a half human/half alien, weapons and tactics expert with a special combat suit – would need to lead all the action. And after more dramatic turns in Moneyball and Zero Dark Thirty, Pratt has certainly proven that he can do that as well. While the other names on the original contenders list (Joel Edgerton, Jack Huston, Lee Pace, Eddie Redmayne, John Krasinski, Zachary Levi) were all fine choices themselves, I definitely don’t have a problem with the lesser known Pratt in the role.

Also, the guy has been known to get superhero level buff for roles.

With Guardians acting as a sort of cinematic litmus test to see if general, non comic geek audiences are ready to accept the more out there, cosmic aspects of the Marvel universe, I’m certain that we’ll see a couple more A-list names popping up, as Marvel would want a few recognizable box office draws to anchor it. There have been rumours that Marvel may be considering either Jim Carrey or Adam Sandler for a role, which many assume would be voicing either the sure to be CGI Rocket Raccoon or Groot, but there has been zero talk of casting for the other two human roles: Drax the Destroyer and Gamora. Anybody care to give Vin Diesel and Gina Carano a call?

Guardians of the Galaxy is scheduled for release on August 1, 2014.

  1. I’m really keen for this. I think I’m more keen for this than I am to see a Justic League movie. Not sure why, but news about this movie definitely grabs my attention more.

This and Thor are actually the two big ones for me. This, for introducing the cosmic side of the Marvel Universe which I love endlessly, and Thor because it appears to be hewing more to the character’s mythological/fantasy roots than a standard superhero blockbuster.
