CLOUDY 2: REVENGE OF THE LEFTOVERS gets a plot and some star PO-PO-POWER!

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs is one of my favourite CGI films of recent years, thanks to its combination of quirky visuals, fun characters, humour and my massive crush on actress Anna Farris, who lent her vocals to one of the film characters.

I’m not the only person who felt that way, as the film was a box office success, making a sequel inevitable. It’s been in production for quite a while now, and it’s finally got a proper plot synopsis, plus some extra talent, from the most maniacally enthusiastic set of muscles to ever grace a film screen.

For those of you who saw the film, you might remember a certain lawman, Earl, voiced by none other than Mr T himself. Clubber Lang won’t be returning to his character though, so producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who directed the first film, have recruited Terry “Expendables” Crews to take over for him.

As for the actual plot and synopsis of the film, here it is:

Live Corp has been charged with cleaning up the island after Flint’s contraption that turned water into food led to a mess of huge pancakes, pizza slices and, of course, meatballs garnishing the pulverized town in the original film. But in the sequel, the machine is still sputtering away somewhere — only now it’s pumping out living pickles, a walking, gibberish-talking strawberry named Barry, and creatures like the giant, french-fry-legged bacon cheesespider, which lords over the abandoned town like a massive cholesterol-spiking tarantula.

Sounds like the plot of Jurassic Park 2: The Lost world, only with more MSG so far. As for other cast members, Bill Hader returns as inventor Flint Lockwood, along with Anna Faris (swooooon) as weather girl Sam Sparks, James Caan as the tech-shunning father of Flint, Andy Samberg as “Baby” Brent and Neil Patrick Harris as Steve the monkey.

Kristen Schaal has also joined the film, as Barb “the super-Steve… an orangutan with a human brain inside her monkey brain — like a terducken”, owned by Chester V, who is played by Will Forte, “a world-famous super-inventor… the head of the Live Corp Company, which is kind of like Apple meets Google, meets every sort of advanced company”, according to producer Kirk Bodyfelt.

“And as head of the company, he’s Steve Jobs, Richard Branson and Indiana Jones rolled into one.” And for those of you who enjoy food-based puns, you’ll be in for a treat, as the sequel will creatures made up from various food items that are “magically, every creature is a combination of a food item and an animal that results in just a cringeworthy pun.”

I really like what I’m hearing so far, and I can’t wait for the second Cloudy film to arrive next year in February. First film story artist Cody Cameron and Kris Pearn are directing, with a script from John Francis Daley, Jonathan Goldstein and Erica Rivinoja.
