[UPDATE: Since posting this story, details have come to light that sheds serious doubt on the credibility of this event. Read the update here]

So you may have heard some rumblings on social media last week and contrary to popular belief they weren’t just the result of Darryn’s new “all beans, all day” diet. It seems that our sunny little corner of Africa would soon be getting it’s very own comic convention!

Dubbed Comic-Con SA, the event sort of caught most of us by surprise (especially since it’s less than a month away), but we spoke to Tlou Ramathlodi, one of the event organizers, to get you the lowdown of what you need to know.

Comic Con SA will be taking place from 26-28 April at the “It’s A House” event venue in De Waterkant, Cape Town. Admission fees will vary from R80 to R150 per person, with extensive discounts being given to folks who present the Comic-Con flyer, dress up in costume, etc. and doors will be open for the whole family from 09:00 to 17:30. Thereafter though, alcohol will also be served on the premises, which unfortunately means that all under 18’s will have to be evacuated as the fun continues until late into the night.

Before the kids run off though, they will have quite a bit to keep them entertained, as the event will feature local comic book creators displaying their wares, free comics, a sketch-off competition, tabletop role playing games, collectible card game tournaments, an anime festival and cosplay competitions. Local comic book store Outer Limits will also be in attendance, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they had a few special Comic-Con bargains for the attendees.

Main sponsors Marvel South Africa will also be on hand, promoting their Marvel Superheroes magazine, while international DJ Vinyl Junkie will be providing some musical entertainment.

Ramathlodi also spoke to local gaming news outlet, MyGaming, where he revealed that video gaming will have quite the presence at the event, with organizers “in talks with local gaming distributors to have the latest games at the show.” He also informed us that a video game tournament will held on the day, so you guys better start brushing up on your skills.

Ramathlodi seemed very excitable about the show when we were speaking to him, and it’s hard not to share his enthusiasm.

“We appreciate the amount of love we are getting from a lot of our fans; the energy is manic, people are geared for this. Seems as though comic book fans have been waiting for this for a while, and it is our absolute pleasure to bring this event to the hungry masses, prepare for epic-ness.”

Ramathlodi also added that that “epic-ness” might soon be headed to a town near you. If fans help to make the the inaugural event in Cape Town a success, then they have plans to to bring the convention to cities around the country in the coming years.

No cast of anything. This isn’t even an actual Comic-Con

    Hey guys,

There’s a lot of confusion around this event if you follow the articles on MyGaming. If you love comic books and geek culture, I recommend you go to Free Comic Book Day at Reader’s Den in Cape Town as it’s guaranteed to be awesome! At FCBD you can expect:

    – Free comics
    – Cosplay competition (which is going to be judged by some of the most well known Cape Town cosplayers)
    – Comic book sale (lots of really cheap comics in the main sale area)
    – All items in the Reader’s Den shop are discounted, but not as much as books in the sale area
    – Artist’s Alley (where local artists get to set up shop and punt their comics and art)
    – Model builders doing a demo of various model kits (last year it was a Gundam kit if I remember correctly)
    – Free anime screenings
    – Awesome prizes to be given away
    – Some of the local fashion guys selling their more “geek orientated” fashion items

I’ve been to every FCBD since I moved to Cape Town and it gets better every year! So amped for the next one!
