Could red mean go for HELLBOY 3 at Legendary Pictures?

It’s amazing these days how many sequels characters like Spider-man, the X-men and Batman have gotten in recent years. But a character like Hellboy, the wise-cracking, kitten-loving demon with a heart as big as his Samaritan gun? Just one. While the first film did well enough to warrant a superb sequel, that second movie just never pulled in enough cash or interest to warrant the completion of a trilogy.

But there’s still hope for the character, because while original studio home Universal Pictures may not have any love for Guillermo Del Toro’s loveable take on the hero, there may be another home waiting for the big red giant.

According to ShocktillyouDrop, Guillermo del Toro and Ron Perlman sat down with Legendary Pictures head Thomas Tull during a promotional blitz for Pacific Rim, where Perlman brought the character up in their discussion. “I hate giving pieces about it, but last night, we were at dinner and Ron said, ‘I would be very happy to do Hellboy again, when are we doing Hellboy 3?’  Thomas [Tull] said, ‘I would love to see Hellboy 3,’ Del Toro said of the conversation. ” He didn’t say he would love to do it he just said he’d like to see it, but today, I’ll ask him.” Perlman later added to that, saying that:

Not just anybody can make this movie.I loved working for Legendary and I know for Guillermo working on Pacific Rim was one of his greatest experiences.  The reason I loved working for them is because Guillermo was so happy.  I came in six months into the shoot and he seemed as fresh as a daisy, simply because he was working for someone who appreciated and supported his outlandish visions of what he wanted to put on the screen.  My immediate, silent wish was, wouldn’t it be great if these guys came in and helped resolve the Hellboy series.

I still think that Hellboy is one of the few comic book films where staying true to the source material has benefitted the movie, instead of hindering it. And with no small thanks to Guillermo Del Toro’s twisted visual style and Ron Perlman making the hellish hero a blue collar slayer of the unknown, the two films hold a special place in my heart. I’m still doubtful if we’ll ever see a third film though. Right now, Del Toro has his fingers in many, many, many, many movie pies, and by the time he gets around to finally making a third Hellboy film, Ron Perlman is going to be a tad too old maybe for this kind of crap.

Unless Del Toro approves of a certain other director to take over the gig while he produces instead…
