Could Michael Keaton be the SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING villain after all?

We all got excited when we heard Michael Keaton will be joining the cast for the new Marvel Spider-Man film, Spider-Man:Homecoming, as potential villain the Vulture. But then had our hopes dashed shortly thereafter when we had heard he had turned down the offer… And now we need to get happy again, as he may actually be appearing in the film after all, according to the latest rumours from The Hollywood Reporter.

We haven’t heard anything official from Marvel yet – and I’m not surprised at all, as they will undoubtedly try and keep as many cards as close to their chest as possible – and you probably shouldn’t expect any official announcements on this until they choose to get the actual Spider-Man marketing kicked into gear. So while it can be an emotional roller-coaster for fans, it’s perhaps best to just treat most rumours coming out for these films with a touch of skepticism until Marvel gives an official announcement.

However, I do think we have received enough smoke around this rumours for it almost certainly be true. Whether he will indeed be playing Vulture, I’m not sure and I wouldn’t be surprised if this is one of those things that Marvel may change to keep the full identity of the villain a secret.

One thing we do know though is that they intend to have a villain in the film who has not featured in the other Spider-Man films before, as mentioned by producer Kevin Feige. This means that the popular villains from the franchise such as Green Goblin, The Lizard, and Doc Octopus are certainly off the table for this film but that the Vulture is still an almost certain possibility. The fact that he will be appearing in a super-hero film though several years after appearing in Birdman (a film that pokes fun at Hollywood’s current love affair with the superhero genre, as well as Keaton’s own real-life history playing Batman) will truly be one of cinemas great ironies.

If the news is true, we will see Keaton join an already stellar cast for the film, starring Tom Holland, which inlcudes Robert Downey Jr. reprising his MCU role as Tony Stark/Iron Man and Marisa Tomei as Aunt May (who also made her MCU debut in Civil War), Tony Revolori (The Grand Budapest Hotel), and Disney Channel pop star Zendaya as (presumably) Peter Parker’s high school peers in the movie. The film is being directed by Jon Watts (Cop Car) and scripted by Horrible Bosses and Vacation (2015) writers John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein.

What do you make of these latest rumours? Who do you think will be the real villain in the new Spider-man film?

He’ll make a good Vulture, but if they go for someone different, I hope it’s Michael Morbius. Yes, Keaton is older, but he’s a good actor, I’d give him any role.
