Crom! Conan the Barbarian is getting a Netflix series

We’ve written several times before about how all the big networks are trying to secure rights to various fantasy properties in the current arms race for viewer attention. Netflix may already have several great fantasy series in the works, but its just secured one more franchise as Deadline has reported the rights to Conan the Barbarian is now in their possession. And yes, that means that a new live-action series based on the popular sword-and-sorcery character created by Robert E. Howard is on the way.

Howard first introduced the character of Conan the Barbarian to the world back in 1932 as part of a series of short stories. A time when the fantasy genre was still in its infancy and as a result, his works have gone on to inspire many other similar stories since. Most of us will be most familiar with the character from the movies in 1982 and 1984, which launched the career of action legend Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Ever since then, the property has remained popular with various animated series and games being produced over time, and a 2011 movie reboot starring Jason Mamoa was also released. More recently, Amazon was hoping to create a Conan series but those efforts failed to materialise and now Netflix has swooped in to take the sword from them.

Things are still in very early development though, with the production team of Fredrik Malmberg and Mark Wheeler currently looking for a writer/showrunner as well as a director to shape the series. Along with the obligatory stars who will be so vital to drawing audiences into watching this.

Which I guess, brings me to the important question of who should play the iconic Barbarian?

I hope it’s an amazing series. Conan deserves to be held up there with some of the best fantasy worlds. I am really looking forward to it. If one thought GoT was a dark fantasy world, if this series is anything like the other media, this series could give GoT a run for its money.

Florian Munteanu or as I like to call him Florian the Mountain… I think he’s doing one of the Marvel movies though. But, yeah, the guy could easily be Conan.

Yeah he has a role in Shang-Chi. He definitely has the physique. Want to see more of his acting though. Only ever seen him in Creed II.

Another guy who could do it is Tyler Hoechlin.

Conan needs to be a monster of a man.
If he could act, The Mountain-who-rides would work.
But I doubt he’d be able to pull off being a lead in a series.
What about the guy who played in Creed 2? The one who was Lundgren’s son?

His name is Florian Munteanu. He’s 29. He’ll be in the upcoming Shang-Chi movie. Definitely they should look at him.

But will it be Conan taken directly from the pages of Robert Howard’s writing? Or are we going to see an Hyborian Age crammed through a lens of modern politics and sensibilities with an attempt at “creating conversation and public discourse” Is Conan going to play second fiddle to his brave female warrior companion who was created specifically for the show? Is Conan even going to be a man?

If Conan is going to be female, please let Gina Carano be lady Conan!!!

Obvious trolling aside, I really hope they stick true to the pulps though and capture the gritty and violent nature of the Hyborian Age. If there’s anything to be learnt from Game of Thrones it’s that a gritty and violent fantasy show can work (just don’t botch the ending.. lol). Crom! My balls are ready for Conan.

I will never say anything mean about Cris Cyborg, because I know that if she finds me, she’ll hulk smash me into oblivion.

Another hectic lady is Sara Sigmundsdottir – although not in mma but she steamrolled onto the crossfit scene back in 2015.

She looks cross and she looks fit.

But can she fight? How’s her takedown defence?

With that physique, I doubt she’ll go three rounds without gassing.
You can do all kinds of fitness training, but get in a cage with another fighter and all that means nothing.
