There is understandably a lot of excitement around the CW crossover between The Arrow, Flash, Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl and the potential that having all these heroes together on the small screen will bring. But as with any good superhero story, the focus is not just on the heroes themselves, but also on the villains in the story, who in my opinion, will often make or break the narrative and determine its ultimate success.

And we finally have some details on what type of villains we can expect from CW for the cross-over, from Deadline. And to bring together an epic line-up, the villains are suitable epic, with the Dominators the villain that will unite this foursome.

So, who are the Dominators you ask and why should you be excited about their appearance? They were first introduced to the world in 1967 by Jim Shooter for DC’s long-running anthology series Adventure Comics. The Dominators are members of an alien empire known as the Dominion, a rigid caste society in which social status is denoted by the size of a red circle on one’s forehead. However, despite how rudimentary that might sound, they are also emotionless and calculating. The Dominators are also scientifically advanced and are masters of genetic manipulation and seek to enhance their abilities to aid in their conquests, by pursuing the genetics of others.

While the thought of improving their own gene pool could sound innocent enough, in 1989 as part of a three-issue limited series named “Invasion!”, they formed the lead part of a massive alien invasion on Earth. While the invasion is justified as a means of quelling the threat posed by Earth’s superheroes to the schemes of the various invaders, it’s revealed that the Dominators’ true plan is to harvest our world’s metahumans in order learn to breed their own. So essentially, they want to take their own strong genes and make every member of their race a superhero. Why they didn’t just go and take on planet Krypton from the beginning, we will never know. After all, stories are more fun when aliens are invading Earth anyway.

What will be interesting to see is how these characters are brought to the screen. The Dominators have tall, lanky frames, yellow skin and sharp teeth and nails, which make then standout and an interesting alien race to portray on screen. However, in the Deadline feature, Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow executive producer Marc Guggenheim, stated that:

“We’re using cutting edge prosthetics and computer effects to achieve a feature film-quality look which is faithful to Invasion! artist Todd McFarlane’s interpretation of the characters.”

While, we don’t know the exact plotline that they will be going with in the story, if its anything like the Invasion storyline, expect some real strong and nasty villains in the crossover series. I like the idea of a different villain that hasn’t been brought to either cinema or TV before, which will make the whole experience truly unique. Hopefully, the villains will be able to live up to their ferocious and cold persona from the comic books.
