Once upon a time, a very young girl by the name of Dakota Fanning, possessing acting talent far beyond her years, was being praised as the next big thing in Hollywood. Then she screamed at Tom Cruise (a lot!) and hooked up with some vampires, and all of a sudden she wasn’t a big deal anymore.

Once upon another time, twin baby sisters were the cute highlight of America’s favourite sitcom. They then grew up to earn lots of money by making really bad movies, and turning kids into a hive-mind. The twins had a younger sister though who shocked the world when she revealed that unlike her older sisters, she actually had acting talent. Lots 0f it, in fact.

And now these two respective talented young girls, Dakota Fanning and Elizabeth Olsen, are joining forces to star in Very Good Girls, a tender looking coming of age drama that if it deftly handles/sidesteps some of the cliched story beats hinted at in this first trailer, it may just make full use of their skills. And I don’t mean Fanning’s skill in shrieking so shrilly at alien invaders that she gives dogs headaches.

Best friends Lily (Dakota Fanning) and Gerry (Elizabeth Olsen), home for one last New York summer, make a pact to lose their virginity before leaving for college. But when they both fall for the same handsome artist (Boyd Holbrook) and Lily starts seeing him in secret, a lifelong friendship is tested.

Very Good Girls was written and directed by newcomer Naomi Foner, and also stars Boyd Holbrook, Demi Moore, Richard Dreyfuss, Peter Sarsgaard, Clark Gregg and Ellen Barkin. It is scheduled for a limited release on July 25, 2014.
