Dan Akroyd responds to Ghostbusters 3 rumours

If ever there was a film franchise that was sorely in need of a sequel in an age where computer graphics have advanced to ridiculous levels of realism, it would have to be Ghostbusters.

The original spectre exterminators have been noticeably absent from the silver screen, while their escapades live on in toys, games, comics, cartoons and uncomfortable fan fiction.

Dan Akroyd recently sat down to talk about those rumours surrounding a possible sequel, explaining what exactly would be necessary in order to bring (most) of the cast together for a third outing zapping phantoms back into the nether-realms of existence.

Akroyd spoke spoke to Empire about how no Ghostbusters film would be complete without their faithful accountant, Louis Tully, who was portrayed by Rick Moranis on the big screen.

“If we can get the script to Ghostbusters 3 right, then it would definitely have Moranis as a major component”, Akroyd said. “None of us would want to do the movie without having him as a participant.”

Akroyd then hinted that even if a third film were to be made, chances were that Bill Murray would not be back to play Peter Venkman, but that character would instead be portrayed by someone else.

“The script must be perfect. We cannot release a film that is any less than that. We have more work to do”, Akroyd said in general about Ghostbusters 3.

And as for that rumour that Bill Murray read a script for Ghostbusters 3, that he then shredded and sent back with a note saying “No-one wants to pay money to see fat, old men chasing ghosts”, Akroyd denied it completely.

“Bill Murray is not capable of such behaviour. This is simply something that would not be in his nature. We have a deep, private personal relationship that transcends business.”

“We communicate frequently and his position on the involvement in Ghostbusters 3 has been made clear and I respect that. But Bill has too much positive estimation of my writing skills to shred the work.”

So, cryptic yes and no answers from one of the actors as usual. The question is though, would you pay to see a new Ghostbusters movie?

No Moranis, no Murray, no point.

I’d pay to see a new re-booted Ghostbusters movie though I’m not sure I’d want to see one with the original actors at all.. Maybe Akroyd could open a new branch in Boston and recruit some new ghostbusters?

That was pretty much the plot of that Extreme Ghostbusters animated series from 1997. Spengler recruits a new generation of ghostbusters from different backdgrounds. If they lost the cartoon’s political correctness, I honestly wouldn’t have a problem with a follow-up like that. Oh, and Murray needs to be there.

I would pay good money to see this.  Even with the old guys…

Reboot?  Not so much…  Not when most of the cast is still alive and kicking and able to perform…
