Daniel Craig is 'done' with Bond… maybe

In news that really isn’t that shocking given the actor once said ‘I’d rather slash my wrists’ than play James Bond again, Daniel Craig has reportedly had his fill of the 007 franchise, a source told the Daily Mail.

Daniel is “done” – pure and simple – after Spectre, he reportedly told top brass at MGM. They weren’t in agreement and apparently threw huge amounts of money at him to entice him to stay, but it just wasn’t what he wanted. He had told people after shooting that this would be his final outing, but the film company still felt he could come around after Spectre if he was offered a money deal.

Craig has apparently made somewhere in the region of £38 million for the four Bond movies he’s starred in, which is nothing to be sneezed at. Something that probably IS to be sneezed at are reports that MGM actually offered him £68 million for just another two movies! If true – and that hugely inflated figure gives some serious doubt to the report’s veracity – then that is just crazy amounts of money. Hell, I’d gladly sell all of Trevor’s body parts for just £68!

Since the story was first broken over the weekend, the BBC spoke to their own sources, who appear to totally contradict the earlier reports.

Daniel Craig hasn’t yet decided on whether he wants to do another Bond movie. Reports in the past 24 hours have suggested that the actor, who’s starred in four 007 movies, has turned down a deal to make any more films in the series.

But separate, authoritative Bond sources have independently confirmed to BBC News that Craig hasn’t made any decision about his future as 007, and that “no decision is likely to be made for a while”.

Earlier this year MGM, which controls the rights to the 007 franchise, told investors that the series was operating on a three-to-four year cycle, which means that the next Bond film isn’t due in cinemas until late 2018 at the earliest.

So now the question is which report do you believe? Daily Mail admittedly has a bit of a tabloid reputation and is usually a less reputable news source than the BBC, but they were also spot on with several rumours during the production of Spectre.

The even bigger question is that if Craig is indeed done – and the send-off at the end of Spectre strongly implied that to be the case – then who will step into the role that generally kills any actor’s career? Idris Elba was once hotly touted but he got so much attention for it that he took himself out of the running. Tom Hiddleston was at an amazing 2-to-1 at the bookies before they suspended betting and he’s actually shown an interest on strapping on the Walther PPK. Loki 007, anybody? My name is Bond, Loki Bond…
