I don’t think Christopher Nolan’s trilogy of Batman movies are a hat trick of awesomeness, but I still appreciate them for what they are. Batman Begins was a moody intepretation of the man behind the cowl as audiences finally got to see how Bruce Wayne became a ninja with too much money, while the Dark Knight is a fantastic film but not exactly a great Batman movie if that makes any sense. The less said about The Dark Knight Rises, the better then because that’s one trilogy-ender that I think gave Batman & Robin a run for its money in sheer awfulness.

If there’s one solid thread that ties all of these movies together though, it’s their stunning visual quality. As a director, Nolan has a unique style for filmmaking that’s smooth and clean. Together with cinematographer Wally Fister, the Dark Knight trilogy is the kind of movie where every frame is a painting of meticulously composed angles and direction. Stunning stuff when you really examine the work that went into making these movies.

While Ben Affleck may be Batman now, Warner Bros. isn’t going to waste a chance to give Christian Bale’s caped crusader a chance to shine in a remaster. In fact, the entire trilogy is getting the 4K treatment. “The wonderful thing about 4K technology is it gets closer to the resolution that we shot in film,” Christopher Nolan said to Badtaste.IT.

Photochemically finished films of 35mm have at least 6K resolution, IMAX films, upwards of 18K. So as home video formats keep evolving, 4K — particularly 4K with HDR, it allows us to give somebody at home an experience that’s much much closer to what it was like to see the original film prints as projected on film.

Nolan was a stickler for shooting the Batman movies on old-school film and in IMAX. High resolutions for cinemas that couldn’t show all of the details of these movies. The end result should be stunning when it finally gets here, which might still be quite a ways away. It’s a long, complicated process that we’re doing right now,” Nolan said, “but I think the results I’m seeing are very pleasing and very spectacular.”

Just swear to me that it’ll have plenty of extras, Nolan. SWEAR TO MEEEEEEEEE.
