David Ayer and Harley Quinn are coming back in a Gotham City Sirens spin-off

Gotham City Sirens (2)

True story: I watched Suicide Squad last week, and I didn’t think it was that bad. Now to be fair, it wasn’t that fantastic either, but that’s because the hints of dark humour and better character development were most likely swept under the cutting room floor by overzealous Warner Bros executives who meddled in the final release of that flick.

Thing is, despite its flaws, I actually liked Suicide Squad. Because that’s a movie with a ton of character. From Will Smith’s scene-stealing Deadshot to a role that actually made Jai Courtney likable for once, Suicide Squad did a fine job. Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn was of course the standout star, a deadly dame and the number one squeeze of the clown prince of crime himself, the Joker. Who purred a lot in that movie. Weird.

Still, while the critical reception to Suicide Squad may have been mixed, the actual box office numbers weren’t as the film pulled in over $745 million in tickets this year. Not too shabby. So I’ve got no qualms whatsoever about Robbie reuniting with director David Ayer to work on their next project: Gotham City Sirens.

Gotham City Sirens (1)

There’s been a rumbling for months now that Robbie would return as her signature character, with THR confirming that the film will indeed team Harley up with Catwoman and Poison Ivy. It’s another bad guy movie for Ayer, this time with an all-female cast. In case you’ve never picked up a Gotham City Sirens comic before in your life, imagine Harley Quinn teaming up with burglar extraordinaire Catwoman and plant-themed supervillain Poison Ivy to get up to all manner of shenanigans.

But here’s where things get even more interesting. THR says that DC and Warner Bros. are working on a Suicide Squad sequel and a Deadshot spin-off starring Will Smith, because that’s not a bad idea at all when you want to leverage some star power in your extended universe. When those films will be out is anyone’s guess, as we still have Justice League, The Flash, Aquaman and a solo Batman movie to contend with. Oh, and that other small indie film called Wonder Woman from DC.

Whatever the future of the DC Extended Universe is, it’s a busy one at this rate.

I watched Suicide Squad without any expectations, fully aware of the bad reviews, but also aware that someone people thoroughly enjoyed it.

It had moments, but I could see why it got the reviews it did.

Yeah, it’s not good, but it’s not bad either.

    A suicide sequel?
That’s either milking or trying to correct for the first, neither of which is a good idea.
This entire new DC live-action universe has too many bad spots already. They might be exciting, but I don’t think many of them are going to become classics.

Aquaman and WonderWoman are the two I’d looking forward to a lot. And of course the Batman solo film.
