The last time director David Fincher (Gone Girl, Fight Club, Se7en) teamed up with Netflix we got the absolutely brilliant House of Cards. Now that partnership is set to continue, with Charlize Theron also jumping aboard as the Oscar-winning South African-born actress and the two-time Oscar-nominated director will be developing an intense sounding new drama series for the online streaming service titled Mindhunter.

Based on the 1996 book Mind Hunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit, by former special agent John Douglas and Mark Olshaker, it tells of the years Douglas hunted down some of America’s most infamous serial killers and rapists, going behind the scenes of some of his most high profile cases including the man who hunted prostitutes in Alaska, the Atlanta child murderer, and Seattle’s Green River killer.

Douglas was a pioneer in the hunt for serial killers, studying and interviewing some of the worst of them to hone his techniques, especially “his uncanny ability to become both predator and prey… reliving both the killer’s and the victim’s actions in his mind, creating their profiles, describing their habits, and predicting their next moves”. This is actually not the first time Hollywood has looked at Douglas though, as he is actually the inspiration for Jack Crawford in Thomas Harris’ The Silence of the Lambs, Will Graham on Hannibal and Jason Gideon on Criminal Minds.

Deadline reports that Fincher and Theron will be serving as executive producers on the series, with Fincher set to direct an undisclosed number of episodes. It is expected that he will follow the same model he used for House of Cards by directing the opening two episodes, and establishing the tone for the rest of the series. It’s uncertain if Theron will be taking a role as well, or will just be involved behind the cameras. Fincher has recruited The Road screenwriter Joe Penhall to pen the series.

Penhall has certainly shown that he knows how to write grim and gritty stories and Fincher has most definitely proven that he is a master at telling chilling tales about serial killers and sadists – he’s even done the true-life killer story in Zodiac – so this could be one potent new series to keep an eye out for.
