David Fincher wants a reason to make World War Z 2

I was surprised as anybody when it was officially revealed that David Fincher will actually be directing the sequel to World War Z. It’s not just because the director famously decided to never do a sequel again because he couldn’t pander to someone’s vision, but also because the first World War Z movie was just so un-Fincher like. That first movie featured many fast-paced high tension action scenes and raced through many of its impressive sequences, which is almost the opposite of what you get with Fincher’s more slow-building tension.  The film was also a little more family friendly with a 13 rating, something which Fincher’s film’s often aren’t.

I’m not sure if it was a matter of sheer desperation or just pure determination from the likes of star and frequent collaborator Brad Pitt that eventually won him over, but now that he is on board for the likely blockbuster, I’m excited to see what he can do with the story and how he will arguably take it down a much darker path.

One thing that Fincher is not keen to do though work to somebody else’s vision, which is one of the things he made adamant in a recent interview with Empire Podcast, making it clear that the film will only get made if it has a decent plot to drive it forward:

I worked on a show for HBO that didn’t see the light of day and at the same time was doing [Mindhunter], and did [Mindhunter] and I’ve been working for about a year now with Dennis Kelly on World War Z…We’re hoping to get a piece of material that’s a reason to make a movie, not an excuse to make a movie.

It’s great to see that Fincher doesn’t want to just make a sequel for the sake of making a sequel, something which studio execs often fail to understand, but it also still leaves him open to not directing the sequel at all if he can’t see a way forward for him to work with.

There is no release date for World War Z 2 yet, but I think its apparent from this statement that there might not be one soon either until David Fincher gets something he wants to work with. Is it too early to start taking bets that this project might not happen after all?
