Director Antoine Fuqua says that the 24 movie is now completely dead

It has been 3 years since we’ve last heard the whisper-shout of Jack Bauer, and since then no other TV series has come close to capturing the nerve jangling intensity and over the top technical gibberish of the exploits of the greatest counter terrorism agent that’s ever lived. And then sorta died. And lived again.

24fans, myself included, have been holding out hope that the proposed (way back) feature length 24 movie would provide us with our long overdue Bauer fix, but now it looks like that hope just had its head cut off and stuffed in a duffle bag.

Director Antoine Fuqua, who was the last big name attached to bringing Fox’s award winning series to the big screen for one last hurrah, was the one who delivered the soul crushing news to Indiewire.

“Yeah, that’s not happening. I don’t think it’s gonna happen at all, definitely not with me,” Fuqua shrugs, putting the stake in what has always been a pretty tenuous project. “I met with Kiefer [Sutherland], Fox wanted to do it, it was a matter of his schedule before he went off to do his new show [’Touch‘].” The story that circulated was that there were budgetary disputes, as well as the matter of a meager offer to Sutherland, and Fuqua leans towards that by admitting, “I don’t think he was able to get a proper agreement with Fox. The time just passed, and I went off to go to what I was doing.””

I remember seeing the reports soon after the movie was first announced that Fox may have been low balling Kiefer Sutherland, the man who portrayed Bauer and led the show to 20 Emmy Awards (off a whopping 68 nominations), 2 Golden Globes and 4 Screen Actors Guild Awards . Now I was still OK with this being what was holding back the movie, as that meant that it was nothing that a little negotiating, lubricated by pricey booze and cheap women, couldn’t rectify.

But the fact that we won’t be getting to see Kiefer Sutherland put bullets into the femurs of more innocent wives simply because he would rather make the rather lame Touch (stop with the numbers and bloody well just say something, child! Also, get a haircut!) is just not right. Especially since the drama is currently flirting with cancellation. Who knows, maybe it does get canned and all of a sudden Sutherland schedule opens up enough for him to start seriously pushing for this to be made?

As to what a 24 movie would actually be about? Well, ironically Fuqua’s latest movie, Olympus Has Fallen, which sees a ex-Secret Service agent have to protect the US President after the White House is taken over by North Korean terrorists, would have been the perfect Jack Bauer vehicle. Throw in a bulldog faced Chloe O’Brien to open sockets and send highly detailed 3D schematics to Jack’s PDA and you had yourself a 24 movie.

The question of course would be how they would adapt the show’s real time gimmick (each of the show’s 24 episodes per season, played out an hour in real time) to a 2 hour movie? Well, you got me there. I do know three things though: 1) Jack Bauer deserves a better send off than what he got in the show’s eighth and final season where he ended up on the run from the very people he’s saved countless time, 2) the show has a massive fanbase and they would all come out in droves to see it, and lastly 3) Nina Meyers and Cheri Palmer needed to die.
