Director Duncan Jones talks WARCRAFT

I’m still genuinely amazed at the airtight lid that has been kept on the Warcraft movie so far. That’s a film project that is going to have some massively dedicated fans rushing to see it, and nothing has managed to escape the watchful eyes of the team working on the movie. There’s still a ways to go before the movie arrives in cinemas on March 11 2016, but speaking to Mtime (via ManMadeMovies), director Duncan Jones shed some new light on what was to come. It’s a Chinese site, so pardon the dodgy translations.

According to Jones, Warcraft will set up the first encounter that humans had with Orcs:

From the moment I first talked to Blizzard, the plan was to start our film with the first time Orcs met Humans.  First contact!  I think that for a world with so much newness to explain, this was a wise choice, especially when so many people in our audience may not know anything about Warcraft… it was important that some of our characters would be seeing the world fresh as well, and that the audience could see the situation through their eyes.

But in Warcraft the Orcs and Humans will both bring an equal amount of importance to the film and its plot according to Jones:

A Warcraft film should not be about a good race of humans battling an evil race of orcs!  Warcraft should be about heroes on both sides trying to avoid a conflict, when villains leave them no choice.

If you look at a Warcraft game, you’ll notice a rather unique design. A design where characters move like agile warriors, despite the fact that they’re wearing enough armour to be mistaken for a 1950s Cadillac. The look and feel of the game, as well as all of the other special effects in Warcraft are currently being headed up by a team that includes visual effects supervisor Bill “Life of Pi” Westenhoffer and Jeff White, who oversaw the Hulk in the Avengers. For the musical side of the film, you can count on Ramin “Pacific Rim” Djawadi to lay down some orchestral magic.

As for more Warcraft movies in the near future, Jones is hopeful that his film will pave the way for future flicks to be produced:

Peter Jackson did a magnificent job of ‘setting the table’ for Tolkein’s universe with his first Lord of the Rings film.  I know that my job in this first film is to establish certain characters, places and culture while telling a story that a broad audience can be excited by! Hopefully, if I have done my job right, people will want to know and see more!  There is certainly plenty more to tell!  …I would love to be part of that process of expanding on the lore that makes up Warcraft, but it will all depend on what you, the audience, think of our first film!

Man, it’s going to be a long wait until 2016.
