Director reveals that It: Part 2 could see the film return to the 80’s

If there is one thing Hollywood loves more than money, its sequels. Mostly because they bring in even more money. It’s almost inevitable that big movies will get sequels, but one film that is getting a sequel that should surprise no one is that of the It reboot, as director Andres Muschietti has confirmed that Part 2 of the famous Stephen King novel is going to be starting production early next year. Considering Stephen King’s It is essentially a story of two halves – with the second taking place 30 years after the events of the first – there was no doubt when this first film was officially titled It Part 1: The Loser’s Club, that they were going to be making a follow-up sequel straight away. That the film has turned out to be excellent based on recent review sentiment should only cement this further.

In a recent interview with Yahoo, the director revealed some details of what he plans to focus on in Part 2 and especially how he wants to explore more of the cosmic dimension called The Deadlights from the acclaimed novel and perhaps also return to the 80’s time period of the first film and not exclusively focusing on the Loser’s Club as adults. If true, it will represent a nice difference in the style of the second film which should help to ensure it remains completely different from the 90s miniseries adaptation of the book:

I really wanted to focus on the emotional journey of the group of kids. Getting into that other dimension — the other side — was something that we could introduce in the second part. In the book the perspective of the writing… is always with the Losers, so everything they know about Pennywise is very speculative and shrouded in absurdity, so I wanted to respect that mystery feeling of not knowing what’s on the other side. I also wanted to leave something for the second half, so I didn’t want to get in trouble with that — going into the macroverse or that transdimensional stuff — and keep it grounded, from the point of view of the kids.

Muschietti went on to mention that “there will be a dialogue between the two timelines”, which could allow a nice connection between the two films or perhaps turn out to be a completely silly plot device as well. He also hinted that Warner Bros is likely to grant a higher budget for the second film, which would probably allow the director to use more visual effects for the second film than the grounded approach that the first film has followed.

We’ve yet to see It locally, but based on the current hype around the film, it may just become one of the must-sees of the year. Thankfully, the wait will soon be over as it will arrive on our shores in 2 weeks time on September 15^th. It’s been a long time since I was last this excited to see a clown.
