Warcraft director Duncan Jones waiting on Legendary for sequel update

While it might not have been the zenith of video game adaptations that fans were hoping for, last year’s Warcraft movie was still decent. The character development was a little rushed, but there was still a great story that was told and the film was set up beautifully for a sequel. While the movie performed underwhelmingly at the US box office, it broke records in China, so naturally everyone expects that the sequel will be on its way so that we can see more of the story play out.

However, since then there hasn’t exactly been any announcements or news about the pending sequel, despite director Duncan Jones’ willingness to do one. And it would appear, according to a recent tweet from the director, that the hold-up is with the production company Legendary Pictures who has yet to okay the sequel.

Although Warcraft did end up making $433 million, it was still an expensive film to make at $160 million, so it’s understandable the studio is a little apprehensive about a sequel – particularly with the US market turning out to be quite cold on the movie and critics not exactly loving the film. The film grossed little over $47 million in the U.S, which is awful when you consider this film was supposed to be one of the biggest blockbusters of the year.

Personally, I hope Legendary realizes the potential they have in the franchise and the opportunity to make enthralling stories in the World of Azeroth. Sequels wouldn’t need to suffer the rushed character development and could more readily get into the meat of the stories without isolating non-fans and hopefully it would then appeal to more people. Not to mention they could continue to break records in China.

It really does need one, the whole first movie was basically a prequel.
Its like the movie was a really expensive proof of concept, preparing us for the real story.

It pretty much felt like the first game to me: not nearly as memorable as everything that came after.
I remember loving it when it came out and I played the crap out of it, but after Warcraft 2 (game) was released, 1 never got touched again.

Yeah, and the story only really gets going in 3. 2 was great, but the story telling was pretty limited.
3 & frozen throne is the story they want to tell.

All the references and little things pointed in that direction.

That’s why I’ve been touting that 1st movie, based on first Warcraft game.
            Warcraft 2, gets a movie.
            Then Warcraft 3 movie.

And they gotta do the World of Warcraft movies. They could go on for YEARS!

I really loved the movie. I don’t think the character development was to rushed at all. I mean I don’t even know much about WoW but I understood what was going on.
The movie set the playing field and everybody has an idea how things kinda happened so the sequels should be able to do good and give people the chance to experience the awesomeness.
I don’t know… I might just be rambling but I would really like a sequel.

One of my favourite movies of the year. The first in over a decade that I wanted to watch a 2nd time IN cinema.

Oh right, I just saw your reference, heh, I TWO WUD LIEK TO SEA IT ARRR

Carry on then, my anger over something that happened today at work that is a continuation of yesterday has blinded me to your clever reference.

Um. No lol I didn’t pirate it. I legit wanted to watch it in cinema a 2nd time. It’s just that 1) I don’t watch movies a 2nd time due to a very good memory, and 2) cinema is a waste of money and time. So for me, it was huge.

I dunno. I guess I just felt weird about it.

And dude, it’s Friday. Hopefully you can grab a burger and a few beers later with mates?

Wife working late today (at least working from home) so I’m going to braai and drink copious amounts of company sponsored beer and greet her after ‘work’ with meat and things

Not a perfect movie by any stretch of my imagination (I loved it personally), but most “critics” out there these days would not know a decent movie if it bit them in the arse. They seem to go like this:
If movie is MCU score it between 8 and 15 out of 10; or
If movie is artsy-fartsy give it score between 6 and 8; else
Make unrealistic expectations and subtract 5 from the score regardless what the score would have been if I reviews it from a neutral standpoint.

I saw a few movies the last couple of years where I clearly saw a different movie than the reviewers lol
