Dishonored 2 struggling on PC

Dishonored 2 is out tomorrow, although you might’ve missed that given the lack of reviews due to Bethesda’s new review policy. The game is in the hands of media and pre-order customers now though, letting you slink or slice your way through a new Dishonored story with either Emily or Corvo. And early impressions are great – unless you’re planning to play on a not so high-end PC.

PC Gamer has had some limited time with the PC port of the title, but they’ve already stumbled on to some confusing performance issues. Playing on their prime rig (equipped with a GTX 1070, i5-6600K and 16GB RAM), the game was able to run smoothly at 1440p, never dipping too far below 80FPS. You’d think then that the game would scale well with older hardware, which is in no way the reality.

Swapping out the 1070 for the older (and significantly more popular) GTX 970, things changed drastically. Here, running the game at 1080p with a mix of medium to high settings, PC Gamer struggled to maintain 60FPS. The game had unceremonious dips down to 40FPS, sometimes inexplicably too. Turning the camera a certain direction or staring at certain object brought about the frame dips, which shouldn’t be as severe given the single difference in hardware generations.

Two different editors also reported issues with the game audio. Stuttering and full cut outs were sometimes common, while the game struggled to sync up the audio with the game visuals during the opening sequence. They’re not game-breaking by any stretch, but it’s the sort of stuff you don’t want greeting you with a brand new purchase.

Thankfully for the most part, the console versions seem to be fine for the time being. We’re already busy with our own playthrough for review, so you can expect that sometime next week.

ALL the way down to 40fps?! *gasp* The horror, the horror. That just makes the game completely unplayable.

I’m sure PC players all over the world are bashing their heads against walls in frustration.

Can we have a test on AMD, like the older HD7970 on win 10 and DX12?
Just to see a… complete test.

    Because of course it is.

Also a 970 really shouldn’t be considered low end or even mid range. It’s a high end card. This is troubling.
