Dishonored 2 might have taken a while to build you any sort of PR steam, but it seems like Bethesda is intent on reminding you just how dynamic and interesting their stealth sequel is looking. The first Dishonored buckled under the weight of expectation, but still managed to deliver some exciting linear missions with some top notch stealth puzzles. If it was any indication of Arkane’s skill, this sequel shows that some might have severely underestimated that.
Clever design always catches my eye, and not much has captured that more than Dishonored 2’s “Crack in the Slab” mission. Here, either Emily or Corvo (remember, you get to choose who to play as) navigates essentially two different levels – separated by three years in time. Players can use a device to seamlessly switch between the two, staying in the same space but being transported back and forth in time. A small mirror allows you to glimpse into the alternate time period, letting you plan kills or sneak past guards.
There was a small look at it at E3 and an even smaller glimpse in the video below, where Arkane discusses their approach to creating singularly memorable missions.
One of the ones we’ve seen frequently is Clockwork Mansion. Players are able to use button and levers to literally transform the level they’re playing in, revealing new routes, hidden floors and more. While that doesn’t sound too different from any adventure game, seeing the architecture rip apart and manage to fit itself back together is entrancing. And even more rewarding if you mange to weave your way through almost impossible routes while they’re in motion.
Dishonored 2 is building upon the strong pillars that the first game established, but its mission design is what has me looking forward to next month. It’s out on Xbox One, PS4 and PC.
