It’s not just several Galaxy Guardians that happen to be hogging the spotlight that Marvel and Disney have setup today, as they happen to have another, sort of unknown project in the works.

If there is one thing that Disney is known for, it’s animated movies, a fact that we’ve just been waiting for them to exploit ever since they bought Marvel. And for their first official animation team-up, they’re going to be hitting the screen with Big Hero 6.

Wait, who?

So who exactly is Big Hero 6? Well, here’s a quick summary from Marvel on the team:

When the Japanese government wanted a team of state-sanctioned super-heroes at their disposal, a top-secret consortium of politicians and business entities known as the Giri was formed to recruit and train potential superhuman operatives for “Big Hero 6.”

Despite reservations by some members of the Giri, Silver Samurai, a freelance ronin and former bodyguard of the terrorist Viper, was appointed as field commander.

Secret agent Honey Lemon, inventor of the nanotechnology-based Power Purse from which she could access any object, also agreed to join the team. The tough-talking GoGo Tomago, able to transubstantiate her body into a fiery force blast by uttering her code-name, was released from prison on the condition that she serve on the team.

The Machiavellian bureaucrat known only as Mr. Oshima was appointed as the Giri’s spokesperson and coordinated Big Hero 6′s activities.

Is it disapointing that we won’t be seeing any of the big guns from Marvel making a CGI splash in the near future? Possibly, but at the same time, they’ve got their own projects to worry about right now, and over-saturating a hero with too many film appearances could be damaging in the long run.

What you’ve got instead, is a super-hero flick that will appeal to the kids and adults on many levels. Fresh faces, crazy Asian technology and jargon, high octane action and the key factor here, a property that is just plain fun to read.

Rumour has it, that producer Don Hall pitched it to Pixar’s CCO, Jon Lasseter, and while I still wait for a second Incredibles film to be realised, this could fill that gap sufficiently, if it makes the 2014 deadline.
