After the huge success of the live-adaptation of The Jungle Book – not to mention Cinderella and Maleficent – it seems Disney execs are excited about the potential for big money by bringing some other animated classic to live-adaptations. And if they are made as well as the Jungle Book adaptation, then they certainly are in line to make a lot of cash.

One of those classics which they are currently in discussions to adapt is The Little Mermaid. Deadline reports that Disney chiefs have recently heard a new take on the classic story and are now evaluating their production options and looking for potential producers who can run with the film. This is alongside their upcoming Beauty and the Beast live-action adaptation which we saw the trailer of recently.

The Little Mermaid was an important milestone for Disney, which produced the animated version of Hans Christian Andersen’s 19th century fairy tale in 1989. That film, which followed the adventures of Ariel the singing mermaid, included some classic songs such as “Under The Sea” and helped usher in a new golden age of animation at Disney. This era would include Beauty And The Beast and Aladdin (another movie which would probably make for an interesting live-adaptation).

However, this film would not represent the only effort to get the story made into a live performance, as Working Title is also reportedly planning to make their own version of the classic story with Chloe Grace Moretz attached to star and Rebecca Thomas set to direct from a script by Richard Curtis.

Outside of Disney’s Marvel and Star Wars Universes they have a lot of films coming up based on their fairytale franchises including Beauty and the Beast, Pete’s Dragon, Cruella, Dumbo, a Mary Poppins remake and Maleficent 2 still in production. It’s certainly a busy and special time for Disney as a studio.
