Disney puts the brakes on Snow White adaptation THE ORDER OF THE SEVEN

Well, it appears that this town is in fact not big enough for the three of them, as Disney has halted production on their proposed Snow White re-imagining, which would have seen Saoirse Ronan as the titular fairy tale character as an English girl in 19th century Hong Kong, “who escapes her wicked stepmother and takes refuge with seven men belonging to an ancient order dedicated to fighting demons and dragons.”

But it would seem that fellow Snow White adaptations, recently released Mirror, Mirror (read our review) and soon to be released Snow White and the Huntsman, are not the only things that prompted Disney’s pulling of the plug. No, some sword swinging guy on Mars might have been the death knell for the fabled princess.

The film would have been the debutante offering from TV commercial director Michael Gracy – after Francis Lawrence dropped out – and would have been based off a script that had been reworked 3 different times already since it was announced, with the latest draft being handled by Iron Man scribes Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby.

As THR reports, with the huge loss Disney took on John Carter, they just could not afford to gamble on another big (and apparently getting bigger by the day) budget production helmed by another first-timer. And although Ronan received some acclaim for her turns in Atonement and Hanna, she’s certainly a far cry from the type of big name box office draw Disney would have wanted/needed to sell this very dramatic departure from the source material.
