Stand back Harry Potter, Disney is finally bringing ARTEMIS FOWL to the big screen

If there’s one thing that young adult books have in common, it’s that they happen to have heroes who most of the time luck their way into saving the day. Think about it: Harry Potter is pretty much useless without his chums, while Percy Jackson is more confused than the audience watching him on the big screen.

But Artemis Fowl? Now that’s the kind of character who should be on the big screen. Cool, collected and quite possibly not a hero, Fowl should have had a movie deal struck ages ago. And it looks like Disney is finally getting ready to throw him onto the big screen.

Artemis Fowl isn’t your usual protagonist. Hell, he’s more of an antagonist some days. Fowl is a teenage criminal mastermind, but happens to be the lesser of two evils who faces off with various threats across the eight books that he has appeared in, which have been written by Eoin Colfer.

Harvey Weinstein has had the film rights for the books since 2001, but after years of numerous scripts, rewrites and the soul-crushing that is development hell, Weinstein left the project in limbo. Now, Alan Horn has brought Weinstein back into the game for an Artemis Fowl film. “If you would have told me five years ago I would be producing a project with Disney I would have thought you were crazy,” said Weinstein in a statement picked up by the Hollywood Reporter.

I feel as though everything is coming full circle considering Bob De Niro and Jane Rosenthal brought me this book while I was still at Miramax and within hours I told them I wanted the rights to the film.

Right now, Michael “Harry Potter and the order of the Phoenix” Goldenberg is working on a script based on the first two books. Here’s hoping that the film finally gets made, or I’m calling fowl on it. Get it? BADUMTISH!
