DJ Cotrona talks about the JUSTICE LEAGUE film that never was

Did you know that a couple of years ago, that Warner Bros had plans to get all their heroes onto the big screen for a Justice League movie, well before Marvel hit the scenes with The Avengers? Well, it’s true, it’s damn true! So whatever happened to that proposed movie?

George “Mad Max” Miller was set to direct it, and he even managed to get New Zealand special effects house WETA to start working on some props and costumes. But then it was canned, due to the fact that the movie would have been a rush-job with a terrible script. DJ Cotrona was going to play Superman in that film, and he had a few words to say about it recently.

Speaking to Coming Soon, Controna explained that due to a writer’s strike, the film never managed to get going, leaving himself and rumoured cast members Adam Brody, Anton Yelchin, Common, Teresa Palmer and Megan Gale to sit around and twiddle their thumbs.

“That was a long slog,”Cotrona said.

We were playing with that for about a year. That was during the writer’s strike time and it started and it stopped. That was a big bummer. I was really, really excited to work with George Miller and the script was really, really good. The stuff that WETA was doing was amazing. It’s just a shame that we didn’t get to finish that because it was going to be really, really cool.

I did the Justice League thing the wrong way. I read too much on the internet. You can’t do that. The internet is the devil. Or the internet is not the devil, the comment boards are the devil. Believe me, I’ve been on the opposite side on there, too saying, ‘You can’t let that guy be that character!’ But really it was WETA, WETA, WETA, WETA, WETA. They are amazing and they can make anybody look like anything. It was a damn shame that we didn’t get to finish that. I promise you that it would have been amazing. It would have been incredible. The scale of this was fantastical. It was a ‘Lord of the Rings’ scale. It would have been really cool.

At the end of the day, Warner Bros never knew what to do with the film. At one point, the script needed more polishing, but the writer’s strike of 2008 made that impossible. And then, they wanted to make four separate films instead.

Maybe it was a good thing to not have the film amde afterall, as the current slate of DC Comics films is starting to look more promising. With Christopher Nolan being treated like Super-God at Warner Bros, and an upcoming Superman film that people say is the best one yet, the future looks good.

And it can only get better, because nothing else is as bad as that other Justice League movie from the 1997.

Happy Friday!
