Don't breathe

Don’t Breathe was one of this years biggest surprise hits. Filmed for less than $10 million, the horror-thriller ended up raking up over $150 million in box office receipts worldwide and doing what very few low budget films are able to achieve, by garnering critical praise as well. And so, it should be no surprise that Sony wants more of it.

However wanting a sequel and making one that is actually decent is not something that many have been able to master (especially horror movies). And Don’t Breathe director Fede Alvarez has revealed that he too was hesitant towards the idea, not wanting to just rush into a sequel for the sake of it. Although in a recent interview with Cinema Blend, it would appears his opinion has changed somewhat as he believes that, along with producer Sam Raimi, they have now found the perfect story to tell for Don’t Breathe 2.

Right now, yeah, Don’t Breathe 2 is something we definitely want to do. The challenge is obvious — we just don’t want to do the same movie again, slap a “2” on it. We’ll feel so embarrassed if we do that. Our first reaction when they told us, ‘Do you want to do it?’ was like, ‘No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. That’s Hollywood! That’s the devil! We don’t want to make a sequel just because we can.’ But then we got an idea that we’re really excited about, and I won’t tell you what it is because it will spoil the whole thing.

Raimi went on to further elaborate saying:

It’s only the greatest idea for a sequel that I’ve ever heard! I’m not kidding!

Now, I wouldn’t get too excited by Raimi’s words. As they reportedly have yet to even pitch the idea to Sony, but I’m glad they’ve found a great story to tell that they believe will do the first movie justice.

What new idea they have to further elaborate on the story of The Blind Man, played by Stephen Lang, who proved to be more than a handful for house robbers Rocky (Jane Levy), Alex (Dylan Minnette), and Money (Daniel Zovatto) is something that I’m interested to see. It’s not going to be an easy story to top, particularly considering people had almost zero expectations for the first film. As long as the films don’t descend into the annual sequel madness that horror films tend to go down, I’m happy.

It looks like Lang’s character remains central to the plans for the sequel, which makes a lot of sense as it was his performance that pretty much stole most of the movie. Lang is heavily involved in production of the upcoming Avatar sequels, though I’m sure they should be able to find the gap to fit him in for a sequel. And I’m hoping they keep it simple and low-budget like the first film as well.

Don’t Breathe 2 is still in early development, so don’t expect any further news on it soon.
