Don't ever expect the Coen brothers to make a BIG LEBOWSKI sequel

The Big Lebowski is one of those rare films, a movie which everyone has heard of but not that many of them have actually seen. Mistaken identity, a carpet that really goes well with the room and the Dude himself are just a few hallmarks of that classic film. It’s a standalone tale, one that doesn’t really need any expansion.

That doesn’t mean that fans aren’t eager to see a sequel though. But according to the directors of that film, the Coen brothers, that will never happen.

Big lebowski 1

“I don’t think it’s going to happen,” Joel Coen said to the Toronto Star. “I just don’t like sequels.” Amongst those people who would be eager for a sequel though, is Jesus himself. And by Jesus, I mean John Turturro who has spoken before of a spin-off film for his bowling lover character. But that ain’t happening either according to the other Coen brother, Ethan:

John Turturro, who wants it, talks to us incessantly about doing a sequel about his (bowler) character Jesus. He even has the story worked out, which he’s pitched to us a few times, but I can’t really remember it. No, I don’t see it in our future.
In this industry, never say never. But with the Coen brothers, I can see them sticking firm to this no-sequel stance of theirs. Besides John Turturro evidently, the rest of the cast has moved on, with Jeff Bridges becoming highly sought-after in recent years. And without the holy trinity of the Coen brothers and Bridges, there is no such thing as a Lebowski sequel.
Would it be swell to have a sequel? Absolutely. Is it necessary? Nope, not at all.

I don’t think any of the Coen bros movies would make good sequels anyway.

It’s because when they tell a story, they complete it. Love their work, even their poorly received stuff has something which usually resonates or at the very least gets a “WTF!?!”.

Very true. Your comment had me look over their movies again and they all do end with a sense of finality. The closest to sequel material is Intolerable Cruelty and Raising Arizona.
