Don't expect anything more than a DREDD short film in the future

I’m still kicking myself over the fact that I missed out on seeing Dredd 3D last year. It was brutal, uncompromising and the most faithful comic book adaptation film that I had ever seen. Hell, it had wiped the more painful parts of Stallone’s 1995 Judge Dredd movie from my mind. The parts that rhymed with Schnod Bider I think.

And yet somehow, it was a box office bomb. On the big screen, it barely made any cash, but on the home movie front? DVD and Blu Ray sales were pretty damn good. It’s just a pity that then, that a sequel will most likely never be made.

Speaking with Dredd fans during a Reddit AMA, producer Adi Shankar confirmed that we’ll see pigs fly before we ever see a proper Dredd sequel. And Shankar pulled no punches when he spoke about the box office failure of the film.

It’s because the movie totally bombed & R-rated movies are a tough sell to begin with. If Dredd becomes a cult hit it will be awesome. Last September was a terrible month: Dredd bombed and then Looper became a massive hit a week later!

Still, Dredd may return in a form that is considerably shorter than a full length movie of bringing law to the lawless. Think Thomas Jane, and that magnificent short film where he returned as the Punisher in Dirty Laundry.

I am working on a Dredd short in the vein of #DirtyLaundry … you’re actually the first person to know about this

I could see that working. A short Dredd experience could possibly convince studios to maybe give the lawman of the future a second chance, and hey, with online video services growing every day, maybe there is hope for Karl Urban to put the helmet back on and ask perps to wait for wait.

I watched it in 3D and man those slow mo scenes were awesome. But other than that, you didn’t really miss out on much 🙂 Fantastic movie IMO.
