Don't expect to see Andrew Garfield return for THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 4

With most film franchises these days, the big plan is to always crank out three movies and close the book. Rarely though, do big name films exceed that release limit, with Transformers and Pirates of the Caribbean being a few such examples.

The Amazing Spider-Man on the other hand, is building up towards two more films with the sequel arriving next year. Sony however, wants to go beyond a mere trilogy and already has a release date locked down for Spider-Man 4. Just don’t expect your friendly neighborhood Andrew Garfield to swing by for it.

Speaking to Yahoo, Garfield explained that beyond his contractual obligations, he wasn’t looking to come back for the fourth film, or possibly even being considered for it:

I mean I’m under contract for another one after this… as far as a fourth one? That’s not anything to do with me. But yeah, I think what we’re doing here is we’ve established the world. And now we get to really play inside that world.

Garfield also revealed how the upcoming sequel would have its own identity, instead of being beholden to previous movies and interpretations which saw the exact same plot trotted out for audiences:

I think there was something missing in the first one because our focus wasn’t on character as much we were trying to keep a number of plates spinning in the air – How can we reintroduce the character? How do we not upset this guy or this guy? That was a tough wasteland we had to move through. Now we could say, ‘who is this guy?’ How can we best serve Spider-Man?’

I’d be sad to see Garfield leave the franchise, as I rate his performance of Peter Parker/Spider-Man leagues beyond the low benchmark that Tobey Maguire set. But an actor needs to grow, and Garfield wants to avoid being typecast as the wallcrawler. Still, who could replace the star of these movies?
