The Wave

Most Hollywood disaster movies get it completely wrong (here’s looking at you Roland Emmerich). They build a terribly unscientific premise around some superficial disaster and then require you to switch your brain off while some poorly developed characters come up with ludicrous and implausible ways of averting said disaster and leaving you feeling completely underwhelmed at the end.

And now that I’ve had my morning rant, I can move onto something better, as the new trailer for an upcoming Norwegian disaster film, The Wave, seems set to show Hollywood how it’s all done.

Personally, I found that really exciting. While the science is still a little off, the tension built looks incredible and the terror feels real. It has been getting rave reviews from a variety of sources and it looks like director Roar Uthaug has done a solid job in making this feel real, especially within a much smaller budget ($6 million) than is typical of the Hollywood blockbusters. It is built around a smaller scale than most Hollywood disaster movies, but that for me adds to its realism and sense of terror. The army can stay well away of this one, please.

The premise for the movie is as follows:

The experienced geologist Kristian Eikfjord has accepted a job offer out of town. He is getting ready to move from the city of Geiranger with his family when he and his colleagues measure small geological changes in the underground. Kristian gets worried, and his worst nightmare is about to come true when the alarm goes off and the disaster is inevitable. With less than 10 minutes to react, it becomes a race against time to save as many as possible, including his own family.

It’s not exactly reinventing the disaster genre, but with the reviews and the incredible reception it received when released in Norway, it definitely seems like one to watch and this looks just so much better than what we are used to seeing. This wasn’t on my radar before, but it certainly is now.

The film stars Kristoffer Joner (who also stars in The Revenant) in the lead role and while there is no word on whether this will be released in South Africa yet, I will be keeping my eye out for it.
