Dwayne Johnson is being eyed to star in a remake of BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA

CAN YOU SMELL, WHAT THE ROCK IS REMAKING? Big Trouble In Little China is, according to people who have seen the film (PLEASE DON’T HURT ME) a classic masterpiece that is still infinitely rewatchable to this day. Kurt Russell at his beefiest prime, taking on sinister magical forces in Chinatown! How could a film like that not be even more awesome? According to Hollywood, adding an even bigger slab of charisma to a remake, would equal an even bigger reboot.

That’s the word according to The Wrap, who say that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is being tapped to star in the remake as Jack Burton,  “an All-American trucker who gets dragged into a centuries-old mystical battle in San Francisco’s Chinatown.”

Johnson will also produce what could be a tricky film in this day and age. Big Trouble In Little China is by all accounts a very weird film, with Kurt Russell’s original performance being a pulpy and oblivious role as he found himself caught in various danger-zones in Chinatown. Seeing Johnson attempt to emulate that memorable performance, could be the real challenge here. Still, Johnson is always effortlessly charming, and I’d dig to see him Rock-Bottom an evil wizard or two.

And dammit, I think I may have to make time to go see the film, after I finally saw the trailer for it:

  1. In case anybody was wondering, I will indeed be punching Darryn in the throat for not having watched Big Trouble in Little China yet.

You’re falling for his cunning ploy to get a Batman voice.

Dear God, how does one grow up in the eighties and go without having seen this film?

I’m going to go out on limb here and blame PE. Since I think they only got a cinema for the first time the other, I’m going to guess that in the 80’s they were still struggling to invent the wheel down there.

This is awesome news, which is weird since I’m suspicious of remakes and also a big John Carpenter fan. But I can fully see Johnson in this role. For the record – Russell’s character was cocky and headstrong, yet bumbling and useless, which was even better since he had to go up against ancient Chinese demigods! Johnson could easily pull this off, especially considering his role in Be Cool.
