We have reported before on Universal Pictures’ desire to do what all movie studios need to do with almost every movie these days – create a cinematic universe. And that cinematic universe they want to create is a Monsterverse, where all sorts of strange and terrible monsters will inhabit earth at the same time, starting with Dracula Untold (maybe) and continuing with their upcoming reboot of The Mummy, which is due for release on June 9, 2017 in the US.

However they want to unleash a lot more of these strange and unusual monsters, with The Wolfman also in development. And according to Comingsoon.net, the studio is currently flirting with Dwayne Johnson and his already busy schedule to secure him as their lead for that planned film. He is a busy man, but certainly can bring the right action hero credentials to the role, along with comedic chops which they are likely looking for if they are to make any of these films resemble the early Mummy films.

So far, The Mummy is set for release on June 9, 2017 and is being directed by Alex Kurtzman, featuring a cast that includes Tom Cruise, Sofia Boutella, Annabelle Wallis, Jake Johnson and Courtney B. Vance. It will be followed by mystery Universal Monsters movies on April 13, 2018 and February 15, 2019. One of these movies will likely be Wolfman, depending on when they can secure their cast for the film. Also, while nothing is confirmed, in order for this to be a true cinematic universe there will likely be cross-overs between films, so look out one of those aforementioned Mummy actors (my bet is on Cruise if the film is a success) to feature in the other movies.

As to what the other monster movies there might be – there are reports that it could be The Invisible Man, with Johnny Depp in consideration for the lead role. It’s all speculation for now, but could be quite exciting if we see a combination of Cruise, Johnson and Depp in one universe together.

With all these cinematic universes around today which now include monsters, big gorillas and lizards fighting each other and aliens battling earth’s super heroes all the time, it’s a wonder anyone still want to live on earth and I’m waiting for the films which prepare us for our cinematic journey off the planet, because I certainly wouldn’t be chuffed to be living in any of these cinematic universes. Unless, I was actually rich enough to be Iron Man or Batman – then I guess I would be okay with that.
