Despite being quite the bibliophile, I never really read any of R.L. Stine’s classic kids-horror Goosebumps series, although I watched my fair share of it’s TV series adaptation back on good ol’ KTV (yes, I am that old!). Now, as with just about everything I remotely enjoyed watching in my childhood, a rebooted feature film is on the way. This new version does some fourth-wall breaking as it features Jack Black playing the role of Stine himself, with the author supposedly having been writing all these ghoulish tales as a means of trapping the very monsters he writes about in these stories.

Did I mention that kids horror stories isn’t big on logic? Anyway, Columbia Pictures ran a Create A Meme competition around the film recently, and as part of the reward they’ve unveiled several pics, including our very first look at all the monsters that Stine has trapped.

Upset about moving from a big city to a small town, teenager Zach Cooper (Dylan Minnette) finds a silver lining when he meets the beautiful girl, Hannah (Odeya Rush), living right next door. But every silver lining has a cloud, and Zach’s comes when he learns that Hannah has a mysterious dad who is revealed to be R. L. Stine (Jack Black), the author of the bestselling Goosebumps series. It turns out that there is a reason why Stine is so strange… he is a prisoner of his own imagination – the monsters that his books made famous are real, and Stine protects his readers by keeping them locked up in their books. When Zach unintentionally unleashes the monsters from their manuscripts and they begin to terrorize the town, it’s suddenly up to Stine, Zach, and Hannah to get all of them back in the books where they belong.

Clowns and dolls. Of course it’s clowns and dolls.

Goosebumps is directed by Rob Letterman (Monsters vs. Aliens, Shark Tale, Gulliver’s Tales) and also stars Amy Ryan, Ken Marino, Dylan Minnette, Odeya Rush, Jillian Bell and Ryan Lee. It was originally scheduled for international release on April 15, 2015, while locally we’ll have to wait considerably longer, as Jack Black will only be unleashing his monsters on local screens on September 4, 2015.
