The topic behind Jeff Nichol’s upcoming film Loving is a familiar one. Back when people thought the world was flat, they also didn’t believe all races were equal and frowned upon the idea of an inter-racial relationships. It took many brave people to stand up and see past these prejudices and laws and get to know people of the other race at an equal level. And the focus of this movie in particular is the true story of Mildred (Ruth Negga) and Richard Loving (Joel Edgerton).

Their mixed-race marriage sparked a years-long legal battle that culminated in the landmark 1967 Supreme Court case Loving v. Virginia, which struck down anti-miscegenation laws all across the US. It’s the typical inspiration story that you would expect to be fodder for award season and from the initial critic reviews from film festivals, it sounds like this film is one of those.

The first trailer for the film looked promising  and now the new trailer for the film has arrived, which you can view below:

This looks like everything you would expect from the film. I like the fact that it focuses more on the relationship between Richard and Mildred rather than on the boring and tedious court trials. The film seems to also be trying to tell a love story rather than be a political one, which is the correct move, considering times have already changed, but also because I’m sure that’s what the couple was about anyway.

The film is out on November 4 in the US and will probably be out in SA around award season time. I guess we’ll only know if it lives up to the quality of the trailer then.

You can read the official synopsis below:

From acclaimed writer/director Jeff Nichols, “Loving” celebrates the real-life courage and commitment of an interracial couple, Richard and Mildred Loving (Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga), who married and then spent the next nine years fighting for the right to live as a family in their hometown. Their civil rights case, Loving v. Virginia, went all the way to the Supreme Court, which in 1967 reaffirmed the very foundation of the right to marry – and their love story has become an inspiration to couples ever since.
