I have an inordinate amount of love for Snowpiercer, the Bong Joon Ho-directed action-drama that saw the remnants of humanity jammed together on a perpetually-circling train following the advent of a new ice age which decimated the world.

It was a brutally unsubtle condemnation of class and society with some truly shocking surprises as we followed the rebellious lower class passengers on their journey to the front of the train to confront its mysterious leader – Wilfred; and featured an all-star cast including the likes of Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton, Ed Harris, John Hurt, Octavia Spencer, Song Kang Ho and Jamie Bell.

When the news dropped a year ago that Tomorrow Studios had optioned the rights to adapt the movie for the small screen, with Bong Joon Ho on board as executive producer and Josh Friedman (Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles, War of the Worlds) writing the adaption, I was not sold on the idea but cautiously optimistic because of the aforementioned’s involvement in the adaption.

However now Joblo are reporting that a network has stepped up to give a pilot order, and it’s not one I’m very pleased about – TNT. They’re best known for more family-friendly programming that doesn’t take all that many risks – think series like The Last Ship, The Librarians, Leverage and Falling Skies. Not exactly the network I’d want to adapt a hard R-rated movie into a TV series because it’s sure to involve some compromises in order to make it palatable for their traditional audience.

TNT’s Executive Vice President of Original Programming, Sarah Aubrey, had the following to say when announcing the pilot order:

SNOWPIERCER has one of the most original concepts to hit the screen in the last decade, and it’s one that offers numerous opportunities for deeper exploration in a series format…on a world where humanity is pushed to the extreme.

Correct. I just don’t know if you’re the right network to do that, because I’d be inclined to call most of your shows… shallow.

What do you think?
