Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

  • Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace is undoubtedly the whipping boy of the entire franchise. And deservedly so. But maybe fans wouldn’t have been calling for George Lucas’ beard on a platter if he he had decided to end it differently.

“Has the Mandarin invented Trevor, or has Trevor invented the Mandarin? Which is which?…The Mandarin could be so supremely intelligent that he could have said, ‘You know what? I’ll invent this actor, and he will be my mask.’ You know, which is which? Who’s pulling the strings. Now, this is me just free-thinking here, but I would love to revisit that world. But Trev, bless him, may have made an indelible mark on that world. So everyone might say, ‘Is it Trev under there?’ So they’d have to approach it quite carefully, and so would I, but I would love to go back to that world, yeah.”

  • Iran is well known for its strict censorship, and when it comes to movies this is no different, with hundreds of foreign films being banned in the past. They have very conservative views to what is considered modest or decent, views that would see most big Hollywood productions just not make the cut. But the moment you ban something, people tend to want it even more. So what’s the heavy-handed Iranian government to do? Release these highly sought after American movies, but making use of a team of digital artists, working off a set 37 rules laid out 3 decades ago, edit certain scenes to remove potentially offensive material. Like men and women sharing a couch together.
  • Speaking of censorship, the Russian government came under a lot of fire recently for the treatment of stance towards homosexuality. But this is the internet, where everything can be turned into a joke, no matter how serious. Which is why we now have this “Russian trailer” for Brokeback Mountain.

  • Everybody has their vices which they know are bad for them, but they do it anyway. Some people smoke two packs a day, others get blind drunk before teatime. Me? I read Dan Brown novels. And much like the books, I know their film adaptations are generally not that good, but I tend to watch them anyway. Because of that, I was wondering what was happening with the next chapter in director Ron Howard and star Tom Hanks’ Robert Langdon series. Last we heard, they were thinking of skipping over “The Lost Symbol”, the third book in Brown’s franchise after Angels and Demons” and “The Da Vinci Code”, and now those claims have been confirmed with Deadline reporting that the duo plan to start shooting Inferno, an adaptation of the fourth Langdon novel, in April.
  • The start of a new week, some new Star Wars: Episode VII spoilers. And once again its the folks at Latino Review that are dishing the dirt, this time with some supposed details on the film’s villains. Some of which actually contradicts their earlier details on the the film’s villains. So yeah.
  • Poster of the day: Guardians of the Galaxy

  • MacGruber!!! Will Forte’s bumbling MacGuyver ripoff has developed quite the cult following, resulting in the funnyman being asked about a followup movie just about every where he goes. Which is why when Forte held a press conference to promote his new movie , Collider obviously asked him about MacGruber 2 instead.

COLLIDER: Does people asking you about a MacGruber sequel ever get old?
WILL FORTE: No, it is very exciting because it means that people liked the first MacGruber.  Unless they are saying, “Are you serious about Macgruber?”
“Like” is a weak word.  We need to go with the word “loved.”
FORTE: Thank you.  I’m very proud of that movie.  Jorma [Taccone] just sent an outline for MacGruber 2.  We had worked together on something and I had fleshed out the first act of MacGruber 2.  He took that and went nuts on the rest of it.  I’m very excited because I feel like at some point, if somebody will let us do it, then we’ll do it.  But it’s out of our hands.  But we’re writing it for sure.

  • The Incredibles is about as perfect a movie as Pixar has ever made, but apparently it’s not enough for one Youtuber who would apparently love to see what a much more grim version directed by The Dark Knight‘s Christopher Nolan would look like.

  1. urg Dan Brown. The Da Vinci code was a fun book, Angels & Demons was basically the same book with some names changed but alright, The Lost Symbol was the same thing with the added benefit of being no fun & laughably bad. I don’t even want to guess what Inferno is like.

I always found Angels and Demons to be a better book than Da Vinci Code, but that’s because I read A&D first (which is the correct order) and also because there was nothing shocking or groundbreaking about DVC’s big reveal as Gabriel Knight 3 had done it already years before :p

Yeah, I read DVC first, doesn’t really matter though – they’re the same. Funnily enough I actually liked Deception Point & Digital Fortress more than the Robert Langdon books.

If you haven’t read Lost Symbol yet do yourself a favour and don’t, just… don’t.

I’ve read Lost Symbol and the fact that the only thing I can remember about it is that has something to with the Washington monument should tell you a lot.

And yeah, I rather dug Deception Point and Digital Fortress as well. Far better written books imo.
