Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!
- So after reading my review yesterday, I’m hoping that you guys are going to check out the awesome Furious 7 today. Maybe you’re planning to, but just can’t recall all the complex plots and deeply interwoven character relationships (hey, stop sniggering in the back there!) of the previous six movies and need a refresher, but don’t have time for nearly 12 hours of movies. Well, the Verge is here to help with that, with the fastest, most furious recap ever.
- Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig have made a Lifetime movie. No, really. Somehow in all their busy schedules the two comic actors found time to secretly shoot and complete a new movie for the Lifetime network called A Deadly Adoption. Now Lifetime is infamous for their low-budget, super melodramatic movies, so this might seem like an odd fit for Ferrell and Wiig, but what this will actually be is a parody of those very same lame movies. Well, I guess nobody can ever accuse Lifetime of not having a sense of humour about the stuff they put out.
A Deadly Adoption, which is set to debut on Lifetime in a few months time, will see Ferrell and Wiig as a “successful couple who house and care for a pregnant woman (played by 90210 alum Jessica Lowndes) with the hopes of adopting her unborn child — then things quickly go awry.”
- Poster of the day: Back to the Future II
- Go, Joe…. writer! Yes, a new screenwriter in the form of Aaron Berg has been tapped to take a crack at the upcoming G.I. Joe 3. Berg may not be a household name, but he should be soon as his script for the Joe Cornish directed Section 6 about the origins of British Intelligence’s MI6 sparked a bidding war between studios. And also a lawsuit. DJ Caruso is currently assigned to direct the third G.I. Joe movie.
- Way back in 1980, when Brad Bird (The Incredibles, The Iron Giant, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol) was still a nobody, he pitched his very own adaptation of classic comic The Spirit. Clearly, the movie was never made – which unfortunately meant we would end up with this crap version years later – but some concept art and has now surfaced along with details on that failed pitch.
- Earlier on we featured a Fast and Furious video and then a Back To the Future poster. Guess there’s only one thing to do now: Mashup!
- According to Cindy over at Pajiba, she’s unearthed 9 Clues That Prove That Prometheus Is The Ultimate Thinking Person’s Sci-Fi Film. I think I’m going to need popcorn for this one.
- To paraphrase The Dropkick Murphys, it looks like Mark Wahlberg is shipping up to Boston. Marky Mark is set to produce and also star in Patriots Day, a new around the police manhunt following the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings. Wahlberg is set to play Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis whose firsthand account is being used as the basis for the script. This is actually the second high-profile Hollywood flick surrounding the event as the Daniel “Safe House” Espinosa directed Boston Strong is also currently in production.
- Bonus poster of the day (because I love scaring Nick with clowns): Poltergeist
- Ho, ho, ho and a bottle of rum… to numb the pain of a busted hand and a delayed movie. As we previously reported, Johnny Depp was rushed from the Australian set of Pirates of the Carribean 5 after injuring his hand, and it’s now been revealed that he required surgery that involved inserting a pin into a damaged finger. Originally, producers said that interruptions would be minimal and shooting would just continue around Depp’s predicament, but the latest report says that with Depp unable to return for at least four weeks, production on the sequel has now officially been shut down. That means approximately half of the film’s 400-plus cast and crew will now have to stand around doing nothing until whenever Depp is cleared to return to work.
- There were obviously lots of April Fool’s Day gags yesterday, and ComingSoon.net has a great write-up on the best movie-related pranks they could find. My two favourites though? Scientists at CERN using the Large Hadron Collider to confirm the existence of the Force, and this promo from Marvel for what’s coming in Phase 9 of their movie universe.
