Extras-750-final

Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

  • We start off today on a bit of a solemn note, as yesterday actually marked the 1-year anniversary of the death of Fast & Furious franchise star Paul Walker who passed away in a car accident while on a break from shooting the upcoming Fast 7. The cast and crew of the Fast franchise has always been like one big family, and heartfelt tributes from them have been pouring in to mark that fateful day.
  • Awards season is almost upon us, and while I couldn’t give a rodent’s gluteus maximus about all the unnecessary pageantry, I am once again looking forward to co-hosts and all-around awesome people Tina Fey and Amy Poehler just kill it at the Golden Globes as they have for the last two years. And the dynamic duo are already off to a good start with this promo video.

  • Somebody needs to test George Lucas’ midichlorian count. I think he may secretly be a really powerful Jedi, because how else would you explain his ability to see the future. Back in 1983, Star Wars star Mark Hamill conducted an interview during which he spoke about Lucas’ future plans for the franchise, and eerily enough, besides for being off by just a couple years, he may just have been spot on.

“[George] at one time said, ‘Would you consider playing an Obi-wan type character handing Excalibur down to the next generation?’ and I said, ‘When would that be?’, and at the time he said, ‘Oh, around 2011.’”

  • And talking about powerful characters returning, there have been some rumours going around that the Red Skull would be returning in Captain America: Civil War. There’s just one problem with those rumours: Nobody’s actually asked the Red Skull, as actor Hugo Weaving revealed:

“I have absolutely no idea. I haven’t talked to anyone about it, so yeah, we’ll just have to wait and see. No idea at all.”

  • If you haven’t yet seen the mid-season finale for the fifth season of The Walking Dead, then I highly recommend you avoid the TV series’ official Facebook page. Fans of the show living on the US East Coast were up in arms (which could be a literal thing, knowing this show) when the Facebook page spoiled the season’s dramatic ending less than a minute after it had aired on the West Coast. With delayed broadcasts between East and West, spoilers are not an uncommon thing, but usually it’s not the show themselves doing the spoiling. Broadcast network AMC has since removed the post after receiving several complaints, but the damage had already been done. If you want to read more, then click here, but beware of SPOILERS. Duh.
  • I may have had a few small niggles with Gareth Edwards’ recent Godzilla flick, but visual effects was definitely not one of them as the film’s digital wizards did incredible work. And now you can see some of that work in action, in this behind-the-scenes VFX featurette.

  • You may not ever have thought that you would want to see The Legend of Korra done in the style of Power Rangers, but trust me, you will. You totally will.

“I’m taking on the toughest racing challenges of my life for this new Discovery TV series. Along the way I’ll meet extraordinary individuals, spectacular machines and hear amazing stories of how far people go to satisfy their love of speed. The extreme challenges will take me right out of my comfort zone as I compete against the best on land, water and in the air.”

  • Despite it’s flaws, I have a lot of love for Chris Nolan’s Interstellar just for bringing back that sense of awe and wonder coupled with space exploration that we haven’t seen in sci-fi movies in a very long time. Now I don’t know whether Interstellar acted as an influence, or this is just fortuitous timing, but a short film from Erik Wernquist titled Wanderers has just popped up online, and the jaw dropping film does exactly that. The short doesn’t really have a narrative as it just celebrates exploration by making use of imagery based on real locations/events in our solar system. AND IT’S INCREDIBLE! Seriously, I suggest you watch this one at full screen with the highest video and sound possible and just marvel in the experience.

“Wanderers is a vision of humanity’s expansion into the Solar System, based on scientific ideas and concepts of what our future in space might look like, if it ever happens. The locations depicted in the film are digital recreations of actual places in the Solar System, built from real photos and map data where available.
“Without any apparent story, other than what you may fill in by yourself, the idea with the film is primarily to show a glimpse of the fantastic and beautiful nature that surrounds us on our neighboring worlds – and above all, how it might appear to us if we were there.”
