Extras-750-final

Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

  • We’re less than a week into 2015, and we already have a front-runner for most ridiculous casting rumour of the year. You remember Harley Keener the cute, 12-year old tech savvy kid played by Ty Simpkins in Iron Man 3? Well, according to a rather silly rumour from Movie Pilot, Marvel want him to replace Robert Downey Jr. as the new Iron Man in Iron Man 4. Now Simpkins was awesome in IM3 and is poised to become a household name with Jurassic World (and he may possibly even have a multi-picture deal to appear in the MCU again), but taking over from RDJ? I can’t  even type that with a straight face!
  • Speaking of people who can’t keep straight faces, Sylvester Stallone has revealed via Twitter, that while he’s currently shooting Rocky spinoff Creed, his next projects will indeed be Rambo: Last Blood and gangster flick Scarpa, in that order.

  • Poster of the day: An American Werewolf in Paris

  • In case you haven’t noticed, South Africa has become a bit of a movie hotspot over the last few years, with several big budget productions either being set in our back yard, or using our country to stand in for other, more expensive locales. This type of Hollywood attention has left the local film industry smiling. But that won’t be the case for the Kristen Stewart led rom-com The Big Shoe, and no, not just because they’re taking the lead from the permanently grouchy K-Stew. The flick, which would have seen Stewart as “Delphi, a foot model and sex worker who helps to inspire a creatively stifled shoe designer”, was supposed to be shot in Cape Town and released later this year, but due to the SA Department of Arts and Culture seemingly not doing their job and only producing R4 million of the planned $32 million in funding, producers have now pulled the plug completely.
  • When visual effects are really good, you shouldn’t even know they’re there (you hear that , George “Green Screen 4 Life” Lucas?). And to prove that, look no further than this VFX reel for David Fincher’s Gone Girl. And if you know find yourself going “There was VFX in Gone Girl?”, then you can consider my point made.

  • So you may have heard that the Sony Hack has revealed that the studio was considering giving Idris Elba the next shot at playing James Bond. Well, unfortunately, there’s a very good, aesthetic reason why he can’t play the famed 007, and yes it has to do with how he looks.
  • I guess somebody’s doing some hocus pocus to keep Constantine alive. Despite a growing fan base, NBC’s adaptation of cult classic supernatural comic book Hellblazer was not working any magic in the ratings, prompting the studio to halt all production on the show. Normally, that’s the death knell for a show, but it would seem that a sudden upswing in viewers has kept the show alive just a bit longer, as the TV network has not just announced that the show will be returning to air on January 16, but its also been moved from it’s graveyard Friday 10pm time-slot to the more primetime 8pm feature. Whether this is enough for it to get its ratings up high enough to justify a second season is still up in the air, but at least we’ll get to see the first season to fruition.
  • Sometimes, when writing a movie review, you have to labour at it for days on ends, wrestling with how to voice an opinion on the film. And other times, it’s as easy as just letting the movie review itself.

  • It may be a bit late for Christmas but this replica of Sting, Bilbo Baggins’ sword from The Hobbit (not the singer), which doesn’t light up when Orcs are nearby but rather GLOWS WHEN IT DETECTS WI-FI, may just be my next gift to myself.
  • If there was ever a case for the phrase “…and it couldn’t have happened to nicer people”, then this list of the highest-grossing actors for 2014 is definitely it, as it’s revealed that perrenial public sweethearts Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt brought in the most box office dollars for last year.
  • Is it just me, or is this LEGO version of the Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer kind of creepy?
