Extras-750-final

Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

  • How about that Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer, hey! Phwoar! That little piece of 2-minute geek heaven has me so psyched up that I feel like rewatching all the Marvel movies released thus far. One after the other. In one sitting. And it would seem that there are people out there who have had the same crazy idea as six of America’s biggest cinema chains have just unveiled “The Ultimate Marvel Marathon”. It’s a 27-hour long, 11-movie marathon that features all of the Marvel feature films released thus far, culminating in the first screenings of Avengers: Age of Ultron. If you’re lucky enough to find yourself over in Obamaland, this insanity event kicks off on April 29th and tickets are on sale now!
  • Ever wondered what the X-Men movies would be like if they were made by Wes Anderson? Of course you haven’t (because you only do the good drugs), and now you don’t need to either!

I simply must have one of those jumpsuits!

  • I don’t think many people are ever going to accuse Downton Abbey and The Guest star Dan Stevens of being beastly, but I guess that’s Hollywood casting for you as the rapidly rising star has been tapped to play the titular Beast opposite Emma Watson’s Belle in Disney’s upcoming live-action Beauty and the Beast. He won’t be ex-Hermione’s only chisel-jawed suitor though, as The Hobbit‘s Luke Evans has also joined the cast to play douchey Gaston, the “handsome antagonist who tried to win Belle’s heart and, after losing it to the beast, led a group of townspeople on a hunt to kill the creature”.
  • Poster of the day: House On Haunted Hill

  • In news [BUDWEISER!] that will probably surprise absolutely nobody [APPLE!] that has actually seen it, Transformers: Age of Extinction has won [XBOX!] the award for Most Product Placement In A Single Film,[FORD!] showing off 55 different brands over the course [GM!] of its 165-minute running time. For the record, this is the 3rd time [CHEVROLET!] that director Michael Bay has won the award [OREO!] with Pain and Gain and Transformers: Dark of the Moon respectively claiming that honour in previous years [BEATS BY DR DRE!].
  • Is this our very first look at concept art for the upcoming Masters of the Universe movie? Columbia Pictures’ senior vice president DeVon Franklin revealed what appears to be a pic of He-Man’s Battle Cat during a Twitter exchange with fans last night when first asked for an update on the movie and then in response to an assertion that if Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy could be a huge success then Masters could do the same.

  • In case you missed it, Jared Leto got a haircut. Normally this would be the type of celebrity inanity resigned to tabloids, so why are we interested that the Oscar-winning actor has chopped off the shoulder length locks he’s sported for years? Because he did it as part of the process of becoming the Joker for David Ayer’s Suicide Squad.

Now let’s see that full makeup test, Ayer!

  • MGM have acquired the film rights and are set to do a remake animated classic Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, because of course they are. Robert C. O’Brien’s timeless 1971 children’s book about “Mrs. Frisby, a recently-widowed field mouse who faces impossible odds in the quest to move her family before a farmer’s plow comes through”, was most famously adapted as an animated feature film by animation legend Don Bluth in 1982. Although O’Brien’s award-winning novel spawned two more sequels, and there have been subsequent attempts to revitalize the franchise on-screen, nothing has come of it before now. Let’s see if MGM have better luck this time.
  • Steven Spielberg and Alfred Hitchcock. Two true masters of their craft who given the world some of the best movies ever made, and influenced generations of filmmakers to come. But who is the better artist? Is it Spielberg with his sweeping visuals and emotive storytelling? Or maybe Hitchcock with his genre defining mastery of suspense and groundbreaking cinematography? With so many things to praise about either, it’s incredibly difficult to pick a victor. Which means that there’s only one way to settle a debate like this: Rap battle.
