Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

  • There are few times when manly men find it acceptable to cry – or as we like to cool it, shed unnecessary lameness through our eyeballs – but one of those is definitely when a hero in a movie makes the ultimate sacrifice, laying down his life so that his comrades can live. Which is why I have a feeling that some of you may be reaching for the tissues before this supercut of 43 heroic sacrifices are done.

  • Speaking of heroes making sacrifices (like sacrificing your inability to turn a desk lamp into a torture device), last night saw the return of the world’s greatest counter-terrorist agent, Jack Bauer, to TV screens in the US. It’s uncertain when/if Jack will be whisper-shouting on our local screens again, but in the mean time, to prepare yourself, check out Vulture’s list of 24 Things To Remember Before Watching 24: Live Another Day.

“Sam [Raimi], Bruce [Campbell] and Rob Tapert and I are good friends and we talk to one another often and we’re always coming up with new ideas and projects. Sam is teasing Army of Darkness 2, which he is working on the script with his brother, but at the same time Evil Dead 2 is something we definitely want to do at some point. But part of the reason I think the last one was successful is because Sam took his time to find the right team of people to do it. We took the time to find the right script and all of that. If you had Evil Dead 2coming out the following year, it’s just for the market, not because you’ve found the right idea. It takes time to find the right idea and that’s what we’re doing. It’s always in the background and always in our heads. And every time I talk with Sam, we’re bouncing around ideas to find what would be the perfect sequel.”

  • Poster of the Day: Fan-made Star Wars: Episode VII with new cast

“Kraven. I like the idea of Kraven. The Vulture… Ock… I always thought the idea of Mysterio was interesting…. Maybe Scorpion. But really, Kraven I think is kind of interesting.”

While speaking to the folks at Grantland, Webb also assured them that all the villains already teased in TASM2 were not just put there for no reason.

“I had to talk to Drew Goddard (The Sinister Six writer/director) and make sure these things were going to be played out in the future universe. There are some very specific plans, for example, for [Doc] Ock and for Vulture. Or the man in the hat at the end of the first movie. All those things emerge with varying degrees of emphasis.”

  • The official Star Wars instagram account posted this pic yesterday of Disney CEO Bob Iger, with what appears to be everybody’s favourite foghorn-voiced 7-ft tall walking shaggy rug aka Chewbacca, who will be seen on screen again in Star Wars: Episode VII.

  • I always knew I like China for a reason (besides the delicious cuisine, kung fu movies and cheap labour), as Big Bang Theory, the grossly overrated sitcom that has left Darryn and I mystified for years as why people find it funny, has been removed from Chinese TV, after a governmental crackdown on shows deemed offensive. As in offensive to my sense of humour, yeah. Other Western shows that got the chop were The Good WifeNCIS and The Practice.
  • And just as Big Bang Theory got its just desserts, so too has Orange Is the New Black. Netflix’s women’s prison dramedy has deservedly picked up lots praise, and just one month before the debut of the show’s sophomore outing, it has already been renewed for third season.
  • Instead of asking who this mysterious final female role is in Star Wars: Episode VII, or just who the young cast will be playing, the question we should be asking is “What band is going to play in the Mos Eisley cantina?” Luckily, that’s a question that College Humour – with the help of some celebrity musicians – can answer.

“We’re putting it together now and seeing if we can keep it as funny and with the music we like for a lower budget. All the movies you hear about being made now keep running into budget problems, this and that, and it sounds boring, but it’s just a new world, where they can’t make those $15-30 million comedies anymore. It’s either $3 million or $200 million, there’s almost no in-between…

…Everyone’s adjusting to either a summer tentpole Avengers-type movie, or learning to get down and dirty and gritty and making a smaller movie. I just don’t want to burn the fans and want to make it good, so me and the other writer are combing through the sequel and trying to make it make sense and have good music and be funny within the parameters…. Hopefully it will be soon, or it will be too pointless.”

  • Know what the next big trend in reality TV is? And no, it’s not Keeping Up With the Bonthuyses, which would only last half an episode after which everybody would not only have kept up with them, but have already surpassed them. Instead, according to The Wrap, the new thing in reality TV is naked dating shows. Yep, you read that correctly.
  • We end off today with this fan-made short film, Deathstroke: Arkham Assassin, directed By Chris White & Larry White. The film serves as a sort of prequel to the most recent Batman video game Arkham Origins, and bloody impressive as well as impressively bloody.

Taking place prior to the events in “Batman: Arkham Origins”… A bounty is placed on Batman by crime lord Black Mask, drawing eight of the world’s greatest assassins to Gotham City on Christmas Eve, the most formidable of which is Deathstroke, who provides a bloody and violent demonstration of his skills for Black Mask.
