Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

  • With the soccer (yes, I said soccer not football, suckers!) world cup just 6 days away, most people will be getting into the vibe. Even people like fan-favourite English filmmaker Guy Ritchie (Snatch, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Sherlock Holmes) who directed this cool POV soccer world cup short film for Nike.

  • Djimon Hounsou has joined Harry Potter helmer David Yates’ upcoming bid budget Tarzan adaptation for Warner Bros. And before you start getting up in arms, pissed off that another iconic character just got Michael B. Jordaned, know that physically intimidating Hounsou will actually be playing a character called Chief Mbonga. He is joining the already superb looking cast of Alexander Skarsgard as the titular Lord of the Jungle, Margot Robbie as his Jane, Samuel L Jackson as some kind of compatriot to Tarzan and Christoph Waltz as the film’s main villain.
  • Poster of the day: Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (because it’s an ape, with an assault rifle, riding a horse!)

  • Based on the fact that it’s now officially the most successful animated movie of all time, it’s clear that lots of people really love Frozen. And in the case of one Japanese woman, she even loves it more than her husband. After becoming obsessed with the Disney flick, the lady apparently asked her husband, who had studied Danish literature and thus would be familiar with Hans Christian Andersen’s original tale, to see it with her. When the husband revealed that he wasn’t all that impressed, the lady just took the logical next step and demanded a divorce on the grounds that “‘if you can’t understand what makes this movie great, there’s something wrong with you as a human being!’.

Commencing “let it go” jokes on the internet in 3… 2… 1…

  • So remember that banned Eva Green poster for Sin City: A Dame to Kill For? Judging by the smoothness of your palms, I would guess that you clearly do. Well, a new slightly less risque version has been released to calm down the stiffs (pun fully intended) in the MPAA. You can compare the two versions below

Eva Green also commented on the whole debacle, saying that she really doesn’t get what the fuss was about.

“I’m not actually naked on the poster. I find it a bit odd. It seems like it’s all just publicity—a lot of noise for nothing. You have so many more violent things in the movie business and this is kind of soft. I’m not naked. It’s suggested. I find it really sexy, actually. It’s kind of beautiful. But if it shocks people, I don’t know what to do about it. I don’t want to upset anybody. I don’t want to be seen as just the femme fatale or put into some silly box. I hope that people will have enough imagination.”

  • Technically this is not really movie related, but 1) this is just too funny not to share, and 2) I make the rules around here.

  • Here are the first few pics from Michael “Heat” Mann’s new Chris Hemsworth starring techno-thriller Cyber, which may soon be getting a name change to Black Hat, possibly so that it doesn’t sound like a bad Lorenzo Lamas movie from the 90’s.

“Just got out of working on the Guardians cut for IMAX 3D and I’m unbelievably excited about it. Guardians of the Galaxy has been planned as a 3D film from its very inception. Yes, if you see the film in 2D, you’ll get a full experience. But the 3D experience promises a little something extra. Unlike many directors, I’ve been actively involved with converting every shot to 3D, making sure it works perfectly for the story and the film, making sure it’s spectacular and immersive without being silly, distracting, or overly showy. 3D conversion was once far inferior to shooting in 3D, but over the past couple years new technology has allowed us incredible control over the 3D effects, making it equal to or in some cases greater than shooting in 3D.

As an EXTRA benefit for those who see the film in IMAX 3D, we will be changing aspect ratios throughout the film in a way that makes the experience even fuller and more encompassing. I’ve personally chosen all the places where the changes occur and, again, I love how it’s coming along. The changing aspect ratios in this case are actually a part of the storytelling.

Just wanted to share some of this stuff with you guys since I haven’t had a chance to talk about the 3D much. Hope you’re all having a great day. Hi!”

  • And because I’m inherently evil, we won’t be ending off today on a happy note, but rather the exact opposite. Warning: This clip contains SPOILERS. Second Warning: This clip will rip out your heart and stomp on it, so be prepared to feel all the feels.

  1. You bastard! That last vid had me sniffling like a girl by the time I got to the Green Mile and then crying like a bitch. Great list they did but they forgot about The Iron Giant, Marley in Marley and Me, Maximus Decimus Meridius in Gladiator, Jock in Jock of the Bushveld (local flavour) and what about Bambi’s mother FFS? That movie destroyed my childhood.

EDIT: Almost forgot to mention that poster, just WOW.
