Extras-750-final

Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

  • I won’t lie, when I woke up this morning to the news that Harrison Ford was involved in a plane accident, my heart skipped a beat. As Indiana Jones and Han Solo, Ford has been a cornerstone of two of my favourite movie things ever. But even outside of those franchises, I’ve been a gigantic fan of the man for as long as I can remember, so I was justifiably filled with trepidation. Luckily, that fear was for naught, as while Ford did indeed crash his single person PT-22 airplane into Penmar Golf Course after experiencing mechanical difficulties, his son is reporting that he’s made it out of the crash with only minor injuries.

  • And speaking parents and kids, and crashing and burning… This seldom seen deleted scene from Back To the Future has surfaced online recently. Everybody remembers the awkwardness in the original when Marty McFly’s young mom tries to hit on him. Well in this scene, it’s turned up a notch by Doc Brown encouraging Marty to feel up his mom. Oh and completely misunderstanding the term “gay”. Totes awks.

  • My favorite indie filmmaking duo Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij are back! The team behind The East and Sound of My Voice (which, along with the also brilliant Another Earth turned Marling into Sundance’s favourite darling and definite talent to look out for) will this time be tackling a new Netflix series titled The OA. Marling will star and Batmanglij direct, while both will be writing and producing. The plot it being kept under wraps for now, but I somehow doubt it has anything to do with Green Lantern.

  • Despite having become the internet’s whipping boy in recent years, M. Night BOOM SHAKALAKALAKA! was once the incredible filmmaker that gave us Unbreakable. While I’m not too sure how folks would respond to Shyamalan doing a sequel to Unbreakable, I can tell you that if its anything like Patton Oswalts pitches for an Unbreakable trilogy, it could be totally awesome!

  • Acclaimed Japanese animation studio Studio Ghibli’s latest flick When Marnie Was There has been out in its homeland since last year, but has yet to receive an international release. That’s happening soon though, but since people around the world are apparently allergic to read dialogue on-screen, that means a new English voice cast. As somebody who grew up watching anime and Asian movies, I’ve always preferred subtitles over the original actors’ voices instead of dubbing, but damn if this movie hasn’t put together a stellar cast: Hailee Steinfeld , John C. Reilly, Geena Davis, Kathy Bates, Vanessa Williams, Ellen Burstyn, and Catherine O’Hara.
  • Now that Amy Pascal has resigned as Sony Pictures Chairperson, she’s supposed to moving to a new office as part of her new role as an on-the-lot producer. There’s just a slight niggle that’s holding up her moving plans: The previous occupant of the office she’s supposed to move into has left a very distinct, very pungent, let’s just say, herby odour in the office. The previous owner? Seth Rogen, of course.

  • Remember that incredible hero shot in the new Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer? Oh, I’m pretty sure you know which one I’m talking about! Well, it now just got a little bit better thanks to some handy fans inserting a certain wall crawler into it.

  • While I know it may not be everybody’s cup of [INSERT BEVERAGE OF CHOICE HERE], I kind of enjoyed Lucy. It was the most original offering we’ve had from Luc Besson in years, and I really loved some of the totally nutty concepts introduced. But – BUT! – I know that the film has several problems. Problems that allow guys like CinemaSins to unlock 100% of their joke-making potential.
