Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

  • The battle of the Quicksilvers will soon be taking place, and no this is not a very competitive chemistry lesson. Due to some legal rights gymnastics, the silvery speedster Quicksilver will be appearing in both Marvel’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron and Fox’s X-Men: Days of Future Past, played by different actors in different ways. Now if you’ve seen [SPOILER ALERT] the post-credits scene in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, you would have got your first glimpse at just how the character’s superspeed would be portrayed in Avengers. But what about X-Men? Well, thanks to this commercial, we now know how he will move. And eat a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich.

  • We heard yesterday that while Star Wars: Episode VII is already shooting, there’s still some casting to be done. And today, one of the biggest casting spots just got filled. Peter Mayhew has officially joined the production to once again play everybody’s favourite walking rug, Chewbacca. The 7ft2 actor has played the hairy Wookiee in the original trilogy as well as Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, and is the first of the original cast to be officially cast, though its almost a certainty that the rest will be back.
One interesting thing to note about Mayhew’s casting in Episode VII, is that this is pretty much the final nail in the coffin for any hope that the new trilogy will be honouring the Expanded Universe stories. We know that Episode VII takes place about 35 years after Return of the Jedi, but [NOT SO IMPORTANT ANYMORE SPOILER ALERT] Chewbacca dies in the EU novel “Vector Prime” which takes place just 25 years after Return of the Jedi.

  • The Karate Kid, the unexpectedly decent reboot starring Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith that actually had nothing to do with karate but actually featured kung fu, is getting a sequel. And now that sequel has found a director. Sony has tapped Breck Eisner to direct The Karate Kid 2, which will also see Chan and Smith returning. Eisner previously directed The Crazies remake (Yay!) and Sahara (Boo!) – make of that what you will – and will have his work cut out for him. The previous film, directed by Harald Zwart, had a $56 million opening weekend and ended up grossing $343 million globally off a budget of just $40 million.
  • Did you know that when Batman punches bad guys’ lights out, the lights go on? Confused? Then you have to watch this very informative and quite funny video of What You Never Knew About Tim Burton’s Batman Movie.

I did [hear about a Wreck-It Ralph sequel], to be honest with you. I can’t tell you more, not because I’m being coy, but I believe that it is officially on the cards. I don’t know any more other than a story is indeed being written. I’d be very surprised not to. I’m not blowing my own trumpet. Forget about the music. Just the movie itself I thought was a fantastically imaginative and creative piece of work. Rich [Moore], the director, actually got involved in the writing. There was another writer [Phil Johnston]. Just as a concept, it would be almost remiss of them not to write another one. It’s a great idea and it’s a great character.

  • If you’re the type of person that loves peeking behind the movie curtain, then you need to go read this incredible article on Empire, all about The Amazing Double Life of Vic Armstrong, one of cinema’s most famous and prolific stunt men and stunt directors who has – colloquially speaking – seen some shit, yo!
  • Ridley Scott’s Gladiator garnered plenty of awards and accolades, but I wonder just how many it would have won had this deleted scene been left in.
