Extras-750-final

Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

  • As voracious a reader as I am, I’ve never bothered with audiobooks. I would assumed though that the voice of the person narrating the book would be a huge factor in my enjoyment of it. I have a feeling that I will enjoy Adam Mansbach’s latest “kids” book for adults “You Have To F–king Eat!” a lot, based on the fact that Bryan f–king Cranston is narrating it. Here’s an expletive filled clip from the audiobook.

  • Movies almost always take liberties when portraying real events. It’s not that they just want to lie about things, but sometimes a film just needs a little something to bump up the drama. Case in point: Argo. Ben Affleck’s Oscar winning masterpiece is a study in tension, particularly the film’s razor-wire finale at the airport as the crew are detained by soldiers and their identities are verified. Except, that didn’t happen. In real life, the crew arrived early, got their tickets, got on the plane and left the country with nary so much as a raised eyebrow. We know this because the CIA – yes, that CIA – has gone and tweeted a long list of what was fact and what was fiction in the movie.
  • Posters of the Day: Fan made posters for Black Widow and Captain Marvel solo movies
  • Just when I thought the feature film adaptation of acclaimed video game Uncharted was buried, THR has gone and unearthed a treasure. They’re reporting that not only is the long-in-development adaptation still alive, but Oscar-winning Zero Dark Thirty screenwriter Mark Boal has now been tapped to pen the script. This may seem like a very odd choice for hard-hitting journalist turned screenwriter Boal, but he is apparently a huge fan of the franchise and envisions the movie as “as a swashbuckling adventure in the vein of Indiana Jones.”
  • Some pics from one of the sets of Batman v Superman: Yawn of Tiredness has just popped up, which reveal a rather iconic location for the Dark Knight and gives us a strong hint about what we’re going to see about the character’s past in the movie. I won’t spoil it here, so check out the pic for yourselves.

  • Rupert Wyatt’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes was easily the biggest surprise of 2011, and what was even more surprising was that Matt Reeve’s followup Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was even better in every way. Hell, it’s probably one of the top 3 movies of 2014. But would it have been as good had Wyatt stayed on to direct the sequel? We don’t know, but we do know is that he would have done something a bit different with the apes, taking them out of the trees way earlier.

“[Matt Reeves is] his own filmmaker, I’m a different filmmaker, so it’s great he’s had success with that film and the fact that the franchise lives, that’s what we’re all hoping for.  So for that, I was thrilled when I was watching it.  I just had a very different take, and very different idea of what the movie was going to be, so it’s always going to be colored by that…

…I think the fundamental thing I wanted to do, which I think the franchise will probably do—and I haven’t talked specifically to Matt or Mark Bomback, the writer, of where they’re going with this—but I would imagine the thing that they’re going to go to was the thing I was hoping to do with the sequel, which is go into the cities.  Evolve technically, sort of figure out the combustion engine, so in a way interact with our society.  And for me, I found that fascinating, and I guess what Matt wanted to do—and obviously it was his first Apes film—was play out more the interim aspect of it.  Keep them in the forest for longer and stuff, so that was the fundamental difference between our takes on it.”

  • Inception has a very twisty narrative. Well, actually not that twisty if you ask me, but according to the way this mom explains it, it’s pretty much like a double helix pretzel! Also, Matt Damon!

  • So yesterday we heard that Lexi Alexander definitely wasn’t directing Wonder Woman (something to do with her not being a fan of a certain David Bowie and Queen collaboration), but now we may just know who is. Although nothing has been confirmed yet, reports are that Emmy Award winning director Michelle McClaren is currently the frontrunner for the gig and has had several meetings with studio bigwigs already. McClaren has been doing fantastic work on TV, earning awards all over the place for her stints on Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones, but has yet to make the jump to feature films. Game of Thrones‘ Alan Taylor was in exactly the same boat before Marvel tapped him for Thor: The Dark World and now he’s helming a huge franchise like The Terminator, so McClaren could just be making the same jump to the big time.
  • And Universal is monster-shuffling forward with their shared monster movie universe, as they’ve apparently tapped Prisoners‘ Aaron Guzikowski and Fargo‘s Noah Hawley to pen a script for their reboot of The Wolf Man. If the Wolf Man ends up being played by a desperate Hugh Jackman who tortures Steve Buscemi because he thinks Buscemi kidnapped his son, we’ll know why.
  • If you suffer from paraskevidekatriaphobia – yes, that’s a real word – then you may want to look the other way as we check out Everything Wrong With Friday the 13th.
