Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

  • Hugh Jackman IS Wolverine. He’s been so successful at making the role his own for the last decade, that you just can’t imagine anybody else pulling it off. But it very nearly was somebody else, Dougray Scott to be precise, who was all set to play the mutant but had to pull out at the very last minute due to Mission: Impossible II running over it’s schedule a bit, giving a certain unknown Aussie the opportunity of a lifetime. But before either of these men were even considered for the character, there was a who’s who list of actors attached. One such actor was Mel Gibson. And if you can’t imagine what Mel would look like as the character, allow me to assist you with this piece of official concept art that has just surfaced showing off what the Braveheart star looks like while getting drunk and ranting at his girlfriend as the mutant hero.

  • Keeping things comic booky…. There’s a bit of a wet rumour that’s just begun bubbling up over at Latino Review. Essentially, it boils down to the fact that Universal Pictures has slated a mystery movie for November 16, 2016. And using what little is known about the movie, and a hell of lot of super powered leaps of logic and conjecture, the LR team has come to the conclusion that Universal may just be doing an adaptation of classic Marvel character Namor the Sub-Mariner, to which they hold the rights.

What’s more, there’s another recent rumour that Zac Efron is being courted for some future Marvel role, and using those Sherlock Peter Holmes powers of deduction, Latino Review have concluded that Zac Efron must be Namor.

  • Poster of the day: Noah

  • Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings Trilogy and Hobbit Trilogy has their fare share of detractors (far less so for the definitely superior former), but there’s one person you would think would naturally dig them all: Aragorn himself. Speaking to Guardian (via Collider), actor Viggo Mortensen, who played the hero turned king in the 3 LOTR movies, details at length how he feels that the first film, Fellowship of the Ring, was the best of the lot, but after that Jackson just sacrificed all subtlety for CGI spectacle.

Ooh, burn!

  • Looks we finally got some news about Ridley Scott’s planned Halo digital feature. Okay, maybe got some news. Okay, it’s just a rumour. Apparently, Mike Colter (American Horror Story, The Good Wife, The Following) has been tapped to star in the live-action video game adaptation. And that is the full extent of what we currently know about that.
  • This is honestly the funniest thing I have seen all week (and I work with Darryn!).

  • Speaking of Game of Thrones… There’s a show that likes to keep it in the family, and in case I’m being too subtle, I mean incest. The very messed up relationship between a particular brother and sister in the show, is one of the original plot points that got this whole ball rolling, but HBO may just be taking this thing a little too far now. Brit pop singer Lily Allen has revealed that she was originally offered but then turned down the role of Yara Greyjoy, estranged sister of once-womanizer Theon Greyjoy, who upon meeting her promptly gives her a good feeling up and tries to get into her trousers, before discovering who she is, much to his dismay.

Here’s the very incestuous kicker though: Theon is played by Alfie Allen, Lily Allen’s real life brother. Ew, HBO. Ew.

  • The more I’ve been thinking about The Amazing Spider-Man 2, the more I’ve disliked it. There are so many things they bungled up, like Electro’s motivations, Peter and Harry’s relationship, and don’t even get me started on how Spidey is a selfish, homophobic bully! Oh you don’t know about that last one? Allow me to enlighten you.

  • Having your movie open up the Cannes Film Festival is kind of a big deal. Unfortunately for Grace of Monaco, it’s the wrong kind of big deal. The Grace Kelly biopic, which sees Nicole Kidman star as the Hollywood actress turned Princess, has been absolutely savaged by the critics, like Darryn with a pork chop. Some have called it the worst Cannes opener ever, but I just think that’s very *cough* dis-grace-ful.
  • Hey, it’s Godzilla day, so of course this was going to happen!
