Extras-750-final

Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

  • Character actor Elizabeth Pena, who co-starred in Jacob’s Ladder and La Bamba and had recognizable roles in Rush Hour, Modern Family and more, has passed away at the age of 55. Not much detail surrounding her death has been revealed, but according to her nephew, she passed away after suffering briefly from an unnamed illness.
  • And now for something completely different… In all the time they spend brooding on rooftops, flying through the sky or swinging from skyscrapers, have you ever noticed how superheroes never need to go to the bathroom? Well, Stan Lee has, and he would like to talk to you about it.

  • You know how yesterday’s news pegged Ewan McGregor as possibly being in the running for the titular lead in Marvel’s Doctor Strange? Well, according to Variety he’s just one of four new names that Marvel are looking at, the others being Matthew McConaughey, Jake Gyllenhaal and Oscar Isaac. Now before you get too worked up about those names, take a moment to realize that this now brings us to a total of 17 – SEVENTEEN! – different actors who have now been rumoured to be attached to the role. This shit is getting ridiculous now.
  • Forget about all those other DC movies that Warner Bros has lined up, what I want to know are what the hell are these ancient fortress-like sets being built for Batman v Superman: Dawn of the Rise of the Planet of the Justice going to be used for? This has even my geeky brain stumped.

  • When most moves go through production troubles, it’s usually due to clashing egos or just plain production bungling. But Fast and Furious 7 was struck with a much more tragic and difficult problem when star Paul Walker suddenly passed away in the middle of shooting due to a horrific car accident. Since so much of the plot revolves around his character (and taking into consideration the way he died) it forced director James Wan and the rest of the cast and crew to make some really tough decisions and get very creative in finding a way to somehow finish the movie, while also honoring Walker’s memory. In the end, through some script rewrites, using Walker’s brothers as doubles and some CGI trickery, they have seemingly pulled it off. And according to Wan, it definitely wasn’t easy, but it sure was rewarding.
Fast 7 is definitely the hardest movie I’ve had to do in my career.  And it’s not just me.  Neil Moritz [the film’s producer] has been doing this for a long time and is a very successful, seasoned producer and he said that to me too.  That Fast 7 is the hardest movie he’s ever had to make as well in his entire career.  And it’s very true.  But I think the final product will surprise a lot of people.  It’s that hardest film I’ve ever had to make but it’s also the one I’m proudest of.  I’m really proud of this film.”

  • Looks like Gal Gadot’s ability to wear the clothes of an ancient civilization might just have landed her her next job. Gadot, who plays Wonder Woman in a number of upcoming DC Comics movies, including a solo one of her own, is apparently in early talks to join Timur Bekmambetov’s Ben-Hur remake. Reports claim that she’s circling the role of the female lead Esther, a slave with whom Jack Huston’s titular betrayed prince turned slave falls in love.

The based-on-a-true story drama sees the Thor star as the captain of a 19th century whaling ship who gets stranded at sea with his crew and forced to their breaking points by a monstrous whale that attacks them. The tale would eventually become the inspiration for Herman Mieville’s classic Moby Dick.

  • Seemingly lost in the hoopla around Warner Bros’ announced DC movie lineup was this a little detail from WB CEO Kevin Tsujihara, who also gave the dates for the upcoming three LEGO movies, including the recently announced LEGO Batman, as well as confirming that Harry Potter spinoff Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them will indeed be a trilogy when he also dated them.
    • LEGO: Ninjago – September 23, 2016
    • Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them – November 18, 2016
    • LEGO Batman – May 26, 2017
    • The LEGO Movie 2 – May 28, 2018
    • Untitled Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them – TBD 2018
    • Untitled Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them – TBD 2020.
  • So you think you know all there is to know about The Avengers? Well, you may just be about to learn a thing or fifteen with this very cool and informative video.
